Meet Buttons
Buttons is a 4-year-old, 10-pound long-haired Dachshund who looks as though he has very strong opinions about velvet furniture despite never having owned any.
He's a little underweight at the moment, but he's enthusiastically correcting that situation. Meals are approached with the seriousness of a tax attorney and considerably more optimism.
Buttons is the sort of dog who falls deeply in love with his people. Not in an over-the-top, theatrical way. More in a, "If you're going to the kitchen, I've actually been meaning to accompany you," sort of way. He adores belly rubs, kisses, snuggling, and would happily volunteer for the position of Permanent Lap Attachment.
Because of that, being left alone is hard for him right now. New sounds make him nervous, and he'll let you know if he's crated by himself. Stay nearby, though, and he settles beautifully. At night he's already sleeping quietly in his kennel with a reassuring hand close by, and every day his confidence grows a little more. He's looking for someone patient enough to remind him that the world is, in fact, a pretty safe place.
Buttons would thrive with someone who's home most of the day, whether that's a work-from-home schedule or retirement. He's doing well with another small dog now, but he'd be happiest with an easygoing canine companion who doesn't believe every day requires a summit meeting. Older kids, or an adult-only home, would also be the best fit. He's an exceptionally sweet little fellow, but he can become a bit protective of prized possessions and would rather not negotiate over them. Frankly, if you're only ten pounds, every possession probably feels prized.
He's making terrific progress with house training, though he still marks occasionally, which we expect will improve after he's neutered. Tooth brushing, however, remains the lone diplomatic dispute between Buttons and modern civilization. At present, he finds the entire concept deeply unnecessary. We suspect trust, patience, and a few strategic treats will eventually change his position.
Buttons isn't looking for perfection.
He's looking for constancy.
Someone who understands that the very best relationships aren't built in an afternoon. They're built one quiet evening, one belly rub, one tiny victory at a time.
And judging by everyone who's met him so far...
He's entirely worth the investment.
