Meet Velma - The Quiet Little Soul Who Marches to Her Own Beat
Velma isn't looking to be someone's traditional lap dog.
She's looking for something much simpler: a safe home, a predictable routine, a sunny place to nap, and someone willing to love her exactly as she is.
Velma is a quiet, independent girl with some wonderfully quirky habits. She doesn't demand attention and is perfectly content entertaining herself, usually by trotting little laps around whatever space she's in.
She has hydrocephalus and some associated cognitive and vision challenges, but right now, Velma is doing well and enjoying life in her own unique way.
Velma Loves:
-Sniffing and exploring
-Trotting around the house
-Napping
-Sunbathing
-Quiet relaxation
-Having a safe space of her own
-Calm, predictable surroundings
-Doing her own thing
Velma's Favorite Thing:
Simply wandering around and enjoying her space.
Velma has a habit that makes her foster smile.
She'll happily trot laps around the perimeter of the house-or whatever area she has access to. She's perfectly content motoring around on her own without needing anyone to entertain her.
She's a goofy little dog who seems to find genuine contentment in the simplest things.
Affection on Velma's Terms
Velma likely hasn't experienced much physical affection in her life, and being touched still doesn't seem entirely comfortable for her.
She doesn't particularly enjoy being held. She will tolerate it, but she'd much rather keep her feet on the ground and continue about her business.
With gentle, patient exposure, she's already beginning to become more comfortable with affection.
Velma needs someone who understands that building trust doesn't require forcing physical affection.
For her, love may look less like being carried around and more like being allowed to nap peacefully nearby, wander through the house, or stretch out in a patch of sunshine while knowing she's safe.
Understanding Velma's Hydrocephalus
Velma has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition involving an abnormal accumulation of fluid within the brain.
Her diagnosis does come with some cognitive differences, and Velma is also visually impaired. She does have functional vision and can see well enough to navigate her foster home successfully.
At this time, Velma is as healthy as she can be and has no immediate medical concerns related to her condition.
Her long-term prognosis is unknown. Hydrocephalus can affect dogs differently, and it is possible that Velma's lifespan may be shortened because of her diagnosis.
Her future family will need to understand that uncertainty and be prepared to work with their veterinarian to monitor her throughout her life.
For now, Velma is busy being Velma-and she seems quite content with that.

Foster Location:
Alma, WI
Meet & Greet Availability:
Velma's foster is happy to meet approved adopters within approximately one hour of Alma, WI.
Velma was pulled from a shelter in El Paso, Texas. We don't know everything about her life before that, but she appears to have had limited experience with affection and close physical handling.
Velma isn't the dog who's going to climb into your lap and demand that you pet her.
She's the little dog quietly trotting around the house while you're making dinner. She's the one who finds a patch of sunshine and settles in. She's perfectly happy knowing she has food, water, somewhere safe to sleep, and a home where nobody expects her to be something she's not.
Her medical future carries some uncertainty, but Velma isn't worried about tomorrow.
She's busy trotting around today.
For the person who can appreciate her independence, respect her boundaries, and give this quirky little girl a safe place to simply be herself, Velma has a very special kind of companionship to offer.
