This 7-year-old, 20-pound boy was surrendered to a local shelter after his previous owner reported that he would become reactive around food. Then, while still at the shelter, Jacques developed a serious case of kennel cough. He aspirated, developed a severe lung infection, and suddenly found himself in real danger.
We rushed over and brought him to Pug Nation, where he spent the next month fighting his way back to health. It wasn't a quick recovery, but Jacques beat the infection and is finally feeling like himself again. Now he's ready to find a home that understands him, respects his boundaries, and won't give up when things require a little work!
Jacques does resource guard, particularly around food. He may react or snap if he feels threatened, crowded, or worried that something valuable will be taken from him. He's also sensitive around his neck and doesn't enjoy having a harness put on. These aren't quirks to ignore, but they aren't mysteries either. We know his triggers, which means his future person can set him up for success through thoughtful management, patience, and reward-based training.
Because Jacques can be unpredictable when uncomfortable, he needs a home without small children. He'd do best with an experienced, dog-savvy adopter who can read his signals, give him space when he asks for it, and help him build trust without forcing interactions.
The good news is that Jacques is smart, highly food motivated, and very capable of learning. He also does wonderfully with other dogs. Calm canine friends seem to give him confidence and help him feel like the world isn't quite so scary.
Jacques isn't a plug-and-play dog. He's a dog who's been surrendered, became critically ill, and is still figuring out whether he's safe. He doesn't need someone who expects perfection on day one. He needs someone steady enough to let him exhale. Jacques won't be the right dog for every home, but he doesn't need every home. He just needs the one that'll finally understand him.
