This is one of those posts we wish we didn’t have to write.
Chewbacca came to us as a stray with another dog we named Russell. We don’t know what his life looked like before he arrived, but there are little things that tell us this boy belonged to someone once.
He walks beautifully on a leash. He keeps his kennel clean. He loves being around people, and despite everything going on with him, his spirits are still good.
And Chewbacca definitely makes his presence known.
If you’ve spent any time at the shelter, you know his voice. It isn’t even really a normal bark..it’s almost a yell.
When Chewbacca is ready to come out of his kennel, everyone knows Chewbacca is ready.
And maybe that makes what we’re about to ask even harder.
Chewbacca has several masses, including a large tumor along the left side of his jaw and another near his front elbow.
After being evaluated by our veterinarian, hospice care has been recommended.
Right now, he is receiving pain medication to keep him comfortable and antibiotics for his skin issues.
We will continue listening to him and watching his quality of life closely.
But while Chewbacca is still feeling good, still eating, still enjoying people and still loudly reminding us that he wants OUT...
We would desperately love to find him a hospice foster.
We know what we’re asking of someone.
It takes an incredibly special person with an enormous heart to open their home knowing the time together may not be nearly long enough. But Chewbacca doesn’t know any of that.
He only knows today.
And today, he would rather be lying on a soft bed than waiting in a kennel.
He would rather be able to walk outside when he wants instead of waiting for his turn.
He would rather have someone nearby to love on him, talk to him, take him for a gentle walk and let him simply enjoy the freedom of being a dog in a home again.
We can’t change Chewbacca’s diagnosis. But maybe we can change where he spends this part of his journey.
We don’t want the shelter to be the last home he knows.
We want quiet mornings. A comfortable bed. Grass beneath his feet. His favorite treats. Someone telling him he’s a good boy. And when that unmistakable Chewbacca yell starts up, someone who can smile and say, “I hear you, buddy. I’m right here.”
