The man who found Shiva almost stepped on her. She was lying on the sidewalk so small and so still that at first he didn't realize she was a bird at all. Then he looked again. She was alive, and he'd spotted her just in time.
Shiva had only just fledged. Her first trip into the world ended with what was most likely a car: deep lacerations to her neck that needed emergency stitches, and a left leg that was completely shattered. With careful splinting, rest, and physical therapy, that leg was saved. It healed shorter than her right one, and at an angle, so Shiva now stands like a ballerina holding a pose that never ends.
She's named for the ice Esper of the Final Fantasy games, and the fit is uncanny. In the games, you summon Shiva. In her foster home, nobody has to. She just materializes, usually somewhere high and awkward like the edge of the microwave door. Her foster reports that she insists on inspecting every room in the house, and sometimes flies up and down the stairs as if she's trying to be on two floors at once, the way a cat would if cats could fly. Mischief isn't an occasional event with her. It's the default setting.
All of this comes in a tiny, delicate package: a smoky charcoal hood flecked with pale feathers, a soft silver-gray body, bold black-and-white stripes toward her tail, and bright coral feet, one of them permanently en pointe. She is especially fond of sitting on the Xbox console in her foster home, which feels correct for a Final Fantasy namesake.
Her leg doesn't stop her from flying, but she's happiest with wide, flat, or padded spots to land and loaf on, plus a soft blanket or two to rest her feet. And since she will find every high ledge you own, she needs a pigeon-proofed home where her explorations can be supervised, kitchen included.
If you want a decorative bird who stays put, Shiva is not your summon. If you want a small, fierce, very funny companion who treats your home as a map to be fully explored, apply to adopt her. She's already survived the hard part. Now she just needs a party to join!
