For one solid week, a family kept finding the same gray pigeon on their doorstep. Morning, afternoon, evening. She'd stand at the window like she had dinner plans and they were running late.
They figured she was lost. She was, sort of. Claire is a racing pigeon, one of the birds bred to be hauled hundreds of miles from home and released to fly back, and she never made it back. Here's the part people don't always know: a racer can't simply go feral. She's a domestic bird. No flock out there, no territory, no idea where food comes from. That week of visits was an bird with no options left picking a house and asking, and asking, and asking, until somebody finally answered.
Somebody did. They called for help, and Claire came to GLPR.
She's worth a look in good light. Pale silver wings like brushed pewter, a slate-gray head and breast, and a band of green and violet along her throat that only shows up at the right angle. She can't be released, so she needs an indoor home or a fully predator-proof aviary. Beyond that, she's easy. This is a bird who spent a week volunteering to live with humans.
She already told one family exactly what she wanted. If you'd have answered the door, adopt Claire!
