Meet Walter, Winnie, and Whitney!
These 5-month-old hound mix siblings were a little shy when they first arrived, but they've been blossoming in their shelter routine and are making huge strides every single day. While they're doing great here, a shelter environment is still overwhelming—and we know they will truly thrive once they get into a quiet, loving home environment!
If you're looking to add a sweet, gentle pup to your family, here is what you need to know about welcoming and socializing a shy puppy:
How to Help a Shy Dog Adjust in a New Home
Give Them Space to Decompress: Follow the 3-3-3 rule! Allow them time to settle into a small, safe area (like a cozy crate or quiet room) without overwhelming them with too many new faces right away.
Let Them Move at Their Own Pace: Avoid forcing affection or pulling them toward you. Sit nearby, speak softly, and let them come to you on their own terms.
Reward Small Steps of Courage: High-value treats (like small pieces of chicken or hot dog) work wonders! Pair new experiences, gentle eye contact, or steps toward you with a treat and praise.
Maintain a Predictable Routine: Shy dogs build confidence through consistency. Keeping feeding, potty breaks, and bedtime on a regular schedule helps them feel secure.
Tips for Socializing a Shy 5-Month-Old Puppy
Quality Over Quantity: Socialization isn't about meeting everyone at once—it's about having positive, stress-free interactions. Introduce new sights, sounds, and people gradually.
Controlled Exposures: Start by observing the world from a safe distance (like watching bikes or other dogs pass from your front porch or inside a car) before jumping into busy parks.
Pair New Experiences with Rewards: Hear a loud noise? Give a treat. Meet a new neighbor? Have them toss a treat on the ground near the pup instead of reaching directly over their head.
Watch Their Body Language: If you see a tucked tail, lip licking, or cowering, give them a break and increase their distance from whatever is making them nervous.
Walter, Winnie, and Whitney are ready to swap shelter life for soft beds, belly rubs, and forever families!
