Meet Chico
Chico is a 3-year-old Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix who is looking for a very special kind of home.
Chico was surrendered because his previous family had sheep, and he had begun chasing them. They ultimately recognized that he was no longer a good fit for their situation. We were told that he has always been an outdoor dog, and it is very important that his future home understands that he is not currently comfortable living inside.
In fact, the shelter environment has been incredibly overwhelming for Chico. When we try to bring him indoors, he trembles, shakes, drools, and becomes visibly terrified. This isn't a dog who is simply being stubborn about coming inside-he is genuinely frightened. He's never had much reason to understand that being indoors is a safe and comfortable place.
Chico is also shy with strangers. He won't necessarily run right up to someone new, but with patience, gentle coaxing, and time, he will approach. Once he feels comfortable, you get to see the very sweet boy underneath that bashful exterior. He's reportedly good with children and does well with other dogs.
Because of his history, Chico needs a home that can meet him where he is rather than expect him to immediately become something he's never been. An outdoor or primarily outdoor guardian-dog situation may be the most appropriate placement for him, provided his basic needs, safety, shelter, companionship, and veterinary care can be properly provided. Someone could certainly choose to work toward socializing him and eventually introducing him to life as a house dog, but that would be a gradual process-not an expectation we would place on him.
Chico is going to need someone patient. Someone willing to give him time. Someone who understands that progress may come in tiny steps and that trust can't be rushed.
We're not looking for just any home for Chico. We're looking for the right home-the person who sees a big, bashful boy who needs a little extra work and says, "That's okay. I've got time."
If you're experienced with guardian breeds, livestock dogs, or extremely shy dogs and think you might be the special situation Chico needs, we'd love to talk with you.
Sometimes the dogs who need the most understanding are the ones who have the most to give.
