Introducing Goldie Locks, a 6-month-old, 20-pound Golden mix who appears to have wandered out of a storybook after determining that being an ordinary amount of adorable simply wasn’t challenging enough. Yep, you are looking at a forever puppy, folks. When Goldie first arrived, we assumed she was maybe 3–4 months old. Then the vet estimated she could be anywhere between 6 and 9 months. We have elected to call her 6 months because...well, look at that face. That is not the face of someone preparing for adulthood. That is the face of someone whose long-term financial plan consists entirely of carrying around stuffed animals and hoping a responsible adult remembers to buy snacks. Goldie has the kind of baby face that will probably still have strangers asking, “How old is your puppy?” when she is nine years old. And yes, she is currently only 20 pounds. We know exactly what you are thinking: A gorgeous cream-and-golden dog who looks permanently puppy-sized, may remain on the smaller side, and has the temperament of a warm sugar cookie? Surely this is an internet scam. Somehow, she is real. Her coat is soft, fluffy, and beautifully cream-colored, giving her the appearance of a toasted marshmallow that was removed from the fire at precisely the right moment.
Goldie Locks loves other dogs and has happily joined the furry social committee in her foster home. She plays outside with all three resident dogs but gives special attention to the Golden mix, presumably because she has identified her as a distant relative and would now like to discuss family business. She has also played beautifully with a 6–8-month-old puppy weighing more than 50 pounds. At only 20 pounds, she may resemble a decorative dinner roll bouncing around beside them, but Goldie has never allowed minor details like size, physics, or being approximately one-third of everyone else’s weight to interfere with a good time. Another playful dog would be a wonderful addition to Goldie’s forever home. She enjoys having canine companions and is confident enough to play with dogs considerably larger than she is. She is playful, social, and very much a happy little puppy. Her idea of a successful afternoon includes romping around with the dogs, choosing her own toys, carrying those toys through the house, and then checking whether anyone has left unattended laundry available for immediate relocation. Goldie does not necessarily chew the laundry—she simply collects it. Socks, shirts, and assorted fabric goods are gathered as though she is preparing to open a tiny boutique with an extremely questionable inventory system. If you cannot find something, check Goldie’s current exhibition before blaming the dryer. Cats remain a mystery because there are none in her foster home. We cannot say whether Goldie would love them, ignore them, or assume they are animated stuffed animals with anger-management problems. The Feline Relations Department has not conducted testing, and Goldie has declined to speculate without legal representation. Goldie has not been around children in her foster home either, but she is a very friendly puppy who warms up quickly. She bonded with her foster dad almost immediately and was friendly with the veterinary staff during her very first week. This is particularly impressive because most dogs regard the vet’s office as a suspicious building where kind strangers compliment them before committing unspeakable thermometer-related betrayals. Goldie apparently decided everyone was lovely anyway. When meeting new people, she may need a moment to take everything in, but she does not keep them waiting long before admitting them into her fan club. Goldie is affectionate, enjoys being petted, and has the kind of gentle sweetness that makes people begin rearranging their lives after knowing her for approximately seven minutes. Her foster dad even says Goldie is one he could happily keep and highly recommends her—which, in rescue language, is essentially a five-star review from someone who has already witnessed the puppy shenanigans and still wants to subscribe.
Goldie rates around a 7 out of 10 on the energy scale. She is playful and active, but she is not a furry bottle rocket who requires a wilderness expedition before breakfast. She enjoys playing with dogs, toys, and water, but she is also perfectly happy inside with her people. Her hobbies include carrying stuffed animals, collecting laundry, receiving pets, and making herself comfortable on the couch. She is very much a homebody at heart. When her foster dad goes through the front door to water the flowers, Goldie shows no interest in following. The outside world may contain adventure, opportunity, and fascinating smells, but the house contains toys, furniture, air conditioning, and people available to pet her. Goldie has reviewed both options and believes the indoors offers the stronger benefits package. That does not mean she dislikes being outside. Goldie loves exploring the fenced yard and has discovered that the fountain makes an excellent personal wading pool. Some dogs delicately drink from fountains. Goldie sits in hers like a tiny resort guest who paid extra for the water feature. She likes playing in water and would presumably appreciate a household willing to accept that any available puddle, fountain, or kiddie pool may be treated as her private spa. Goldie loves toys and even plays fetch, making her one of those rare dogs who understands that the purpose of throwing a toy is for her to bring it back—not for the human to immediately regret their decision and retrieve it themselves. She also receives plenty of chew toys because she is still learning what is and is not appropriate to place in her mouth. Goldie is likely teething, which means the world is currently divided into two categories: approved chew toys and objects she has not yet been informed are unavailable.
A securely fenced yard would be best for Goldie so she can safely explore, play with other dogs, and lounge in inappropriate water fixtures without anyone worrying about her wandering off. She has shown no escape-artist tendencies and is not currently plotting to tunnel beneath the fence using a spoon she stole from the laundry room. The fence is simply for her protection and gives this curious little puppy a safe place to play while her family remains inside wearing actual clothes instead of chasing her through the neighborhood in whatever they happened to sleep in. Goldie has not tried leash walking yet, so that particular chapter of her education remains unwritten.As a young puppy, she will need a family willing to introduce leash skills with patience, encouragement, and the understanding that nobody emerges from the womb knowing how to walk politely while attached to a human by a six-foot cord. She is also too small to climb into the vehicle by herself right now, so her foster dad picks her up. Fortunately, at 20 pounds, loading Goldie does not require a ramp, a pulley system, or three neighbors. Once she is inside, she rides very well. Potty training is also still in progress. Goldie is not fully trained yet, but she is working on it. She will need consistency and time to learn the routine in her new home because puppy bladders do not recognize optimism, expensive rugs, or the phrase, “But you were just outside.” Adopters should expect an adjustment period and continue showing her where the approved facilities are located. She is already crate trained and does very well in her kennel. When her foster family is away, Goldie stays in a crate in either the family room or bedroom, although she is most often in the family room. Speaking of furniture, Goldie is allowed on the couch. Naturally. She is 20 pounds, cream-colored, soft, and shaped roughly like something people intentionally purchase to decorate a sofa. Telling her she does not belong there would require ignoring overwhelming visual evidence. She settles in as though the couch was included in her adoption package and looks so appropriate that guests may mistake her for an unusually lifelike throw pillow. Goldie is not much of a barker. She does not feel obligated to announce the wind, file hourly neighborhood reports, or engage in heated political debates with delivery drivers. She is generally quiet and saves everyone from living with a tiny, fluffy emergency siren. She also has no known fears or dramatic overreactions. Vacuums, storms, household noises, and suspicious events have not inspired her to hold an emotional press conference.
