Introducing Willis—an 80-pound, 5-year-old Great Pyrenees, possible Golden Retriever mix who has the general demeanor of a Costco-sized teddy bear, a Southern grandpa sitting on the porch watching the neighborhood, and a warm dinner roll all rolled into one extremely large dog.

Willis’s story with us actually started five years ago when he was just a tiny pup. Unfortunately, sometimes life changes in ways no one planned for. He was adopted by a family and spent the next five years exactly where we hoped he would—home, loved, and part of someone’s life. His former adopter tried hard to make things work and keep Willis with the family he had always known, but eventually it became clear that their circumstances simply weren’t going to allow that. So they made the incredibly difficult decision to surrender Willis back to us and trust us to find their big, gentle boy a new place to call home. So now, at 5 years old, Willis is starting a chapter he never expected to need. Thankfully, he brought along the most important things from his first one: a ridiculously gentle heart, a whole lot of love to give, and approximately 80 pounds of himself to plop directly into the middle of somebody else’s happily ever after. Willis is calm. Willis is gentle. Willis meets people like a man who has been working customer service for 37 years and somehow still genuinely likes the public. He’s basically the canine equivalent of walking into Grandma’s house and immediately being handed a blanket, a snack, and the overwhelming feeling that everything is probably going to be okay. So really, Willis is less “dog” and more emotional-support baked potato with legs.

Now, if Willis had any say in what happens next, he would like his new home to understand that he is five years old, emotionally mature, and no longer interested in participating in activities that seem unnecessarily strenuous. His energy level is a 3/10, which means Willis wakes up each morning with roughly the same enthusiasm for cardio as a middle-aged dad on vacation. He’ll go for a walk. He does perfectly fine on a leash. He’ll inspect the yard. He may even occasionally attempt to play with another dog. But are we throwing a tennis ball 47 times? Absolutely not. Willis does not play fetch. He does not care about toys. He does not enjoy playing in water. Somewhere along the way, this man looked at the entire recreational dog activity catalog and checked “I would actually just like to hang out.” Willis is a HOMEbody. Capital H. His dream Saturday involves being wherever his people are, receiving an unreasonable amount of petting, and supervising household activities he has absolutely no intention of assisting with. Doing laundry? Willis can supervise. Watching Netflix? Willis has trained extensively for this. Taking a nap? FINALLY, an activity where he can contribute. Decided everyone should go hiking and kayaking? Willis regrets choosing this family. He loves people and apparently missed the Great Pyrenees orientation where they explained that strangers are supposed to be treated with at least some suspicion. Willis sees a new person and essentially reacts like Grandma just spotted somebody who hasn’t eaten yet. There is no lengthy warming-up period. No mysterious brooding from across the room. This 80-pound man would like to greet the public. He can get adorably excited when one of his favorite people appears, and his chosen celebration is to jump straight into the air. Not onto you. Just... vertically. Like a very large piece of toast unexpectedly popping out of the toaster.

Willis is also potty trained, doesn’t chew things he shouldn’t, hasn’t shown any resource guarding, is generally very quiet, and apparently doesn’t even get on the couch. His one strongly worded complaint concerns kennels. Willis does NOT enjoy going into one, and once placed inside, he will file his grievance loudly and repeatedly. Considering this is otherwise a very quiet dog, we can only assume his official position is: “I have been an excellent employee and will NOT be returning to cubicle life.” He also becomes very attached to his favorite people and isn’t particularly thrilled when they leave him behind. Willis isn't looking for a family so he can occasionally acknowledge their existence from another room. This is a man who wants companionship. He wants his people nearby. He wants affection. He wants to belong again. Another medium-to-large dog could be perfectly fine—he generally coexists peacefully with other dogs and occasionally decides they're worth playing with—but he doesn't need a canine roommate. He would also be perfectly happy accepting the position of Only Child Who Receives All Available Scritches. Willis is incredibly gentle, but he'd prefer children old enough to understand that his fur is attached to his body and he is not, despite compelling visual evidence, a Build-A-Bear. Mostly, though, Willis is ridiculously easy to love. He's calm. He's trusting. He's gentle with everyone he meets. He doesn't need someone to entertain him every waking second or plan an itinerary worthy of a cruise director. He just wants to be near his people. After spending five years believing he'd already found the family he'd grow old with, Willis isn't asking for some spectacular second act. He'd probably be perfectly content with a quiet house, a securely fenced yard, someone who thinks an 80-pound shadow is a perfectly reasonable home accessory, and a person who will look at him one day and say: “You're home, Willis. You don't have to start over again.”

Now, if you've made it this far thinking:

“OH MY GOD. WILLIS IS PERFECT. I NEED HIM.”

Wonderful. We love this journey for you. However, screaming “MINE!” into the Facebook comments does not constitute a legally binding adoption agreement.
Neither does tagging your spouse. Neither does sending us a message that says, “Is he available?” Neither does telling Willis through your phone screen that you're his new mother. There is, tragically, paperwork involved.

You'll need to fill out an adoption application so we can send it over to Willis's foster family. They are the people currently living with this magnificent 80-pound loaf, so they'll review applications and help determine which family looks like the best match for him. And before anyone falls hopelessly in love and then discovers Oklahoma is inconveniently not located 20 minutes from their house:

His adopter will need to personally travel to Oklahoma City to pick him up. We do not ship Willis. We do not FedEx Willis. We cannot put a postage stamp on his forehead and tell him Godspeed. And while he is roughly the dimensions of a small loveseat, Wayfair will not be handling delivery.
