Introducing Drift—a 6-week-old, 8-pound male Golden Retriever mix who appears to have been assembled from spun sugar, dryer lint, and the concentrated sweetness of every “aww” ever uttered by mankind. Now we know your heart has already packed his imaginary suitcase, named him beneficiary of your estate, and ordered a tiny personalized collar. But before you allow one dangerously adorable puffball to enroll you in another 10–15 years of dog ownership, we need to have a little discussion about something called rescue math. Rescue math says Drift is a Golden Retriever mix because...well, he looks like one. He’s golden, he’s fluffy, and he has the sweet little face of a puppy who has never committed a crime and would like the court to disregard the suspicious puddle nearby. However, his coat is also beginning to suggest that he may have recently lost a disagreement with a hair dryer. There’s a bit of scruff appearing, which means there could be some Doodle mixed into this tiny tumbleweed of affection. Yes, we realize that “possibly part Doodle” probably did absolutely nothing to strengthen your already nonexistent willpower. Our apologies. We are merely reporting the fluff as it develops. Next on today’s episode of Nobody Knows Anything for Certain: we do not know Drift’s parents, which means we cannot promise his exact breed, future size, or precise birthdate. Drift and his siblings were brought to the shelter after being found, and the shelter estimated them to be around 3 weeks old at the time. That would make them about 6 weeks old now. Our veterinarian, however, thinks they may be closer to 8 weeks. If you simply love dogs and don’t care whether Drift grows into a medium-sized golden gentleman, a large scruffy Muppet, or an unexpectedly substantial piece of living room furniture, please continue. You are exactly the kind of person rescue math was invented for. If you need a guaranteed breed, precise adult weight, exact birthday, or written confirmation that every hair on his head belongs to a Golden Retriever, this may be your cue to keep scrolling. Drift cannot provide documentation. He can provide puppy breath, soft fluff, unconditional adoration, and one extremely convincing little face. Frankly, he feels that should be sufficient. Rescue math is mostly judging a book by its cover, admitting we have no idea how many pages it will eventually contain, and hoping someone opens it anyway—because beneath all the question marks is one ridiculously sweet little puppy just waiting for someone to fall completely, hopelessly, and rather predictably in love with him.

Drift is the most independent of the five siblings, which means that while everyone else may be organizing a puppy pile, scheduling group activities, and filing formal complaints because a human dared to leave the room, Drift is perfectly content wandering off to pursue his own tiny agenda. He enjoys doing his own thing, does not mind spending time by himself, and apparently arrived equipped with the emotional independence of a retired man puttering around his garage. He has places to go, invisible objects to investigate, and absolutely no intention of explaining his itinerary. That does not mean Drift is aloof. Quite the opposite—he loves people and will happily greet you at the gate like a very small mayor welcoming an important visitor to town. He is sweet, affectionate, and delighted to receive attention. He simply does not require someone to entertain him every waking second, which is rather impressive for a creature who is still young enough that his primary qualifications are “can wobble,” “has fluff,” and “occasionally understands where his own feet are.” However, Drift’s independence does come with a tiny legal disclaimer. If he finds himself on the wrong side of the gate without access to his people, he may begin wailing as though he has been abandoned at sea during a particularly tragic storm. Sometimes his siblings join in, creating the sort of mournful puppy chorus that would have neighbors wondering whether someone canceled Christmas. Apparently, being independent is wonderful right up until Drift remembers that people exist and he would currently like one.
Around other dogs, Drift is friendly and happy to make their acquaintance. He will gladly participate in the customary introductions, exchange a few sniffs, and determine whether anyone has brought snacks. But unlike puppies who believe every dog must immediately become their best friend, roommate, wrestling partner, and emergency contact, Drift is also perfectly fine going about his own business. He can enjoy canine companionship without turning it into a mandatory team-building retreat. Another dog could certainly be a lovely friend for him, but he does not appear to need a full-time activities director with four legs. His opinion of cats remains unknown. At this age, he may believe they are unusually judgmental puppies, tiny household supervisors, or furniture decorations that occasionally move. We simply do not have enough data. Drift loved the children he met and thoroughly enjoyed being held. He is currently eight pounds of warm, scruffy sweetness, which makes holding him feel a little like cuddling a loaf of bread that grew legs and developed opinions. He is affectionate, gentle, and happy to settle into someone’s arms while they inform him repeatedly that he is the sweetest baby who has ever existed. He has heard this before. He agrees with the findings.
His foster currently places his energy around a 4 out of 10, although that rating comes with another rescue-math footnote. Drift was congested when he first arrived, which likely made him more tired than usual. Because he began his foster stay as “the sleepy one,” that impression has stuck—even though he is now feeling better and doing perfectly normal puppy things. He plays, he sleeps, and then he repeats the process because maintaining eight whole pounds of puppy requires strict energy conservation. He is not currently conducting parkour off the walls, but adopters should remember that he is still a very young puppy. His personality and energy level will continue to develop as he grows, feels better, and discovers additional household structures that can potentially be converted into cuddle-delivery systems. Overall, Drift is a wonderfully balanced little guy: independent without being distant, affectionate without needing to remain permanently attached to your ankle, friendly with other dogs without insisting they entertain him, and clever enough to have already discovered the household’s secret passage to human cuddles. He is playful, but he also appreciates a quality nap. He loves children, enjoys being held, and will happily greet his people as though their arrival is the most exciting event on today’s calendar.
Drift is still a baby, so he will need a family prepared to guide him through potty training, leash skills, crate training, socialization, appropriate chewing, and the shocking discovery that not every object in the house belongs inside his mouth. In return, you will receive a clever, loving, delightfully scruffy little companion who will greet you happily, curl up for cuddles, and probably spend the rest of his life locating increasingly creative ways to summon your attention.

He will not be shipped, transported, delivered halfway, placed inside a padded envelope, or permitted to drift toward you on a favorable breeze. You will need to travel to Broken Arrow in person, collect your eight pounds of fluff, and begin the drive home while repeatedly glancing over and wondering how something so tiny managed to take over your entire life before you even left the city limits.
