Bogey is a 1-year-old, 71-pound male Great Pyrenees mix, and before we get into the instruction manual for this handsome gentleman, we need to talk about how he got here—because his first year of life has contained approximately three seasons' worth of plot twists. Bogey originally found himself facing euthanasia. Someone stepped up and adopted him, and for a moment, we thought that was it. Crisis averted. Bogey had a home. Roll credits. Except...not quite. The people who adopted Bogey hadn't actually been looking to add another dog to their family. They simply couldn't stand the thought of him being euthanized and wanted to save his life. And they did. But once Bogey was home, it became clear that their setup wasn't the right long-term fit for him. Bogey had a tendency to roam, and to keep him from wandering, Bogey ended up chained outside in the heat. And his family knew he deserved better. So now Bogey is here, beginning yet another chapter. Thus begins The Official Bogey Handbook—a comprehensive guide to one very handsome, remarkably chill young Pyr mix who has already been saved once, landed in the wrong situation once, and is now ready for us to get this whole forever-home thing right.
Home is where the air conditioning is...and preferably where someone remembers I enjoy butt scratches. Bogeys dream home is actually pretty straightforward: people who love him, plenty of attention, adventures on the calendar, and a secure yard to prevent him from independently scheduling additional adventures nobody approved. He could happily live as an only dog and soak up all the attention like the enormous fluffy sponge he was born to be, or he could share his home with one compatible canine friend. He currently lives with two female dogs and gets along well with them. They play together, and if one of the ladies decides he is being approximately 17% too annoying, Bogey backs off rather than submitting a formal complaint to management. Cats remain an unanswered question, so Bogey cannot currently provide references from the feline community. Kids are a little more nuanced. Bogey has been around his fosters 18-month-old grandson and is wary of the unpredictable tiny-human experience. His preferred response is to simply walk away rather than participate in questionable toddler petting techniques—which, frankly, shows excellent judgment. He was hesitant to take a treat from him but was very gentle when he finally did. He may warm up to a younger child he lives with consistently, but based on what we know now, an older, dog-savvy child would probably be more his speed. Give him a kid old enough to understand boundaries and participate in adventures, and Bogey could have himself one heck of a best friend. He loves meeting new people. We are currently working on convincing him that greetings can occur with all four paws remaining on the ground. Apparently, enthusiasm has mass.
Bogey lands squarely at a 5 out of 10 on the energy scale. He is not a decorative throw pillow. He is also not a caffeinated Australian Shepherd who has recently discovered CrossFit. Bogey is calm, easygoing, and always up for some fun. He enjoys doing things with his people, but he is equally capable of spending a respectable portion of the day stretched out inside enjoying the air conditioning. This is a dog who appreciates balance. Adventure? Absolutely. Nap directly beside an air-conditioning vent afterward? Obviously. Open the car door and Bogey will happily hop right in. He loves car rides, particularly when they involve the window being cracked enough for the wind to properly tousle his luxurious Pyr locks. He also does well on leash. He may pull occasionally, but he listens and responds when corrected, which means controlled leash adventures are an excellent way to satisfy his desire to explore. A very secure, appropriately tall fence would be needed if he is going to have free access to a yard. However, Bogey spends plenty of time happily lounging indoors, so a home without a traditional yard—or potentially even an apartment—could be an option for the right family committed to regular, controlled leash walks and adventures. Bogey has also been neutered, which may help reduce his desire to roam, but his future family absolutely should not assume surgery has magically deleted centuries of Great Pyrenees software. And regardless of where he lives, this gentleman is not an off-leash candidate. Bogey has already demonstrated that when presented with the opportunity to explore the open world, he has absolutely no intention of consulting you first. Toys? Meh. Water? Absolutely not. Fetch? Bogey has considered it. He has even attempted it. Unfortunately, the resident girls possess what his foster describes as mad fetch skills, and Bogey has apparently decided he is not emotionally prepared to compete at the professional level. So he watches the Olympians do their thing. We respect a man who knows when he's outmatched. Bogey would much rather spend his recreational hours exploring, going for walks, riding in the car, hanging out with his people, or positioning himself strategically for scratches.
For a young dog with an adventurous streak, Bogey is surprisingly civilized inside. He is potty trained and has had no accidents in his foster home. He doesn't chew things he shouldn't. He hasn't been destructive. He and the resident dogs have the run of the house while their foster family is at work, with outdoor access, and everyone returns home to find the house still standing. He would absolutely get on the furniture if permitted, but he respects his foster family's rules. It was also VERY apparent during his first few days that Bogey came into foster care already familiar with the concept of sleeping in a human bed. He apparently arrived, inspected the accommodations and thought: Yes, yes. This will do. Which side is mine? Unfortunately, management informed him that this particular establishment has a no-dogs-on-the-bed policy. Bogey filed his disappointment internally and now sleeps on the floor near the front door, preferably beside an air-conditioning vent. Because if he cannot have Egyptian cotton sheets, he will at least have climate control. Bogey currently knows: Sit. Get back. And he responds consistently. He also listens when asked not to pull on leash and generally seems very willing to cooperate with his people. Crate experience is more limited. His foster family has not needed to crate him, because he has done well having freedom in the house. Bogey would like the record to show that he does not enjoy shower spray directed toward his more personal regions. There may have been some pathetic howling during bath time. Bogey maintains that these allegations are exaggerated. His foster maintains that they are not. Either way, if you're looking for a dog who considers bath day an exciting bonding opportunity, please continue browsing. Bogey considers it a human rights violation with shampoo. Bogey is a Great Pyrenees mix, so naturally he has opinions about suspicious activity. The good news is that Bogey doesn't currently bark randomly while hanging out in the backyard. Bogey is a genuinely sweet, affectionate boy who loves attention. And he has developed a highly efficient system for obtaining it. He walks directly between your legs. You are then expected to scratch whichever portion of Bogey is currently available. Front scratches. Butt scratches. Possibly both if you possess sufficient coordination. Bogey does not discriminate. Your participation is appreciated. Your compliance is assumed. For a dog whose first year has involved far more upheaval than it should have, Bogey remains remarkably uncomplicated at heart. He is calm, friendly, easygoing, gentle, adventurous, affectionate, good in the house, and happiest when he gets to be included.
Now, if you've reached this point thinking, Wow. Bogey sounds perfect for me, wonderful. There is, regrettably, paperwork.
Because despite Bogey's willingness to hop directly into your vehicle and begin your new life together with absolutely no questions asked, the rescue has procedures.

Step Two: We review said application and, if approved, send it to Bogey's foster family. This is the part where the people who actually live with him get to look everything over and determine whether you and Mr. Independent Adventure Pants sound like a good match.
Step Three: If everyone agrees that destiny—or at least a surprisingly thorough adoption process—has spoken, you will need to travel to Warr Acres, Oklahoma, to pick Bogey up in person.
