Meet Melody, a 2.5-year-old, 85-pound female Great Pyrenees who appears to have been assembled by someone who was told “make her sweet” and responded by pouring an entire grandmother into a commercial-sized bag of cotton balls.

This girl is sweet, kind, and loving—the personality equivalent of someone who brings you a casserole, remembers your birthday, and insists you take the good leftovers home. If she could text, she would absolutely ask you to let her know you made it home safely. You could live across the street. Melody would still need confirmation. Melody has recently discovered air conditioning and cool tile floors, and her outdoor adventure era has been canceled due to improved living conditions. She is a homebody with an energy level around 4/10—a girl who wants to relax near her people, not accompany them on a journey of self-discovery up a mountain. You can discover yourself in the living room. There are snacks there. Hiking? Absolutely not. Scaling mountains? She appreciates your enthusiasm. Getting sweaty recreationally? Please stop speaking. Melody would prefer to be inside, near her people, sprawled across the coolest available surface like an enormous furry puddle of pancake batter.
And yes, 85 pounds with more to gain may sound substantial. That is because it is. Melody is not a decorative throw pillow. Melody is the entire bedding department. She is approximately one washing machine, 14 rotisserie chickens, or a suspiciously muscular third grader's worth of dog. But emotionally? Marshmallow. A marshmallow wearing a fur coat. A marshmallow who could block an entire hallway simply by lying down sideways. Melody’s body awareness is running on software designed for a much smaller appliance. She pushes her way around people and other dogs—not aggressively, just with the certainty of a woman moving toward the last available seat at a crowded airport gate. She knows where she wants to go. She knows where she wants to lie down. Whether your knees are currently occupying that route is apparently an issue for your knees. For now, older children or an adult-only household would likely be the best fit. She has not been around children in her foster home, and the right family could be discussed, but being sweet as frosting does not mean you can’t accidentally flatten a cupcake.
Her adjustment to the other dogs was a little rocky at first because she was feeling unwell and cranky after her spay surgery. Understandable. Most of us become unpleasant after sleeping wrong, and she had considerably more going on. She is now learning to play with her foster siblings, although she will give a warning growl if her puppy or the other dogs get too rowdy or approach her food. Think exhausted mother at a restaurant saying, “I have shared my body, my time, and my last functioning brain cell. You will not also be taking my dinner.” Melody should continue to be fed separately from other dogs. She has not shown aggression toward people, and once she finishes eating, she does not guard the bowl—even if food remains. A girl can be loving without running a community fondue station. Playtime is supervised, especially around her ten-pound foster sister, who apparently believes she and Melody wear the same size pants. Her foster thinks Melody finds this little dog amusing. It is very much a chicken nugget challenging a rotisserie chicken to a wrestling match. Melody also met the resident three-year-old tuxedo cat, who hissed his official statement. Melody essentially rolled her eyes and walked away, like a woman who accidentally asked the wrong employee where something was at the grocery store. Fine. She’ll find it herself. She is sweet, kind, and loving, but unfamiliar changes can make her cautious, and she needs time to warm up. She is still learning about toys, treats, and how this whole “being a dog who gets nice things” arrangement works. She does enjoy toys. Fetch, however, has been interpreted loosely. She likes going to get the toy. Returning it seems unnecessary. You launched your property across the yard and she recovered it; now you want her to handle delivery, too? This is how good employees burn out. Her interest in playing in water is still unknown. We cannot yet say whether she is a graceful aquatic marshmallow or the sort of woman who sits beside the pool protecting her purse. Further research is needed. She is motivated by food and affection, which should help with learning—although pill pockets have somehow landed on her list of suspicious substances. Hide medicine in a treat and she acts like you’ve offered her a gas-station sushi sample. Give the medication directly, and she accepts it. Apparently, it’s not the medicine. It’s the deception. This relationship requires honesty, Deborah. Leash walking is very much a work in progress. She will follow her foster around the yard, but once the leash starts providing directions, she digs in her heels like a toddler being removed from the toy aisle, except this toddler is upholstered and could anchor a pontoon boat. She needs a securely fenced yard and patient, positive help building her leash skills. She has not tried to dig under or climb the yard fence, and her foster has not observed outdoor escape attempts. The air conditioning is inside. Let’s not make irrational choices. Car rides require encouragement to get in and out. Once aboard, she is relaxed and watches the scenery like someone’s aunt on a bus tour who has entrusted the itinerary to a man named Gary. She is happy to admire the world.
At home, Melody is doing well with regular potty breaks and has had no accidents since her first few days. “Stay” and “leave it” are getting positive responses. “Sit” has been received with less enthusiasm. Lowering this much fluff is apparently not something she does just because a person suddenly gets an idea. She has not been crate-tested. Her foster uses a playpen-style setup in a separate room. When her foster is away, she stays in that room. At night, she sleeps indoors in the pen with her puppy, in their own room. Her preferred position is stretched out directly in front of the door so breakfast cannot possibly slip past unnoticed. A furry tollbooth. A pancake with surveillance capabilities. Room service will be intercepted. Yes, she gets on the couch. Naturally. You cannot bring a walking comforter into a house and expect it not to recognize its relatives. She has not been chewing things she shouldn’t, and her foster has not reported specific fears or dramatic overreactions. Barking has been rare so far, mainly when she is excited. We are reporting the current observations, not promising that a Great Pyrenees has permanently surrendered her microphone.
