Kai - Border Collie Dog for Adoption in Longview, Texas

KAI

Border Collie
🇺🇸
Longview, Texas
October 4th
male, medium, adult

DESCRIPTION

Good Hair. Great Manners. Suspiciously Well-Adjusted.

Kai is a 45-pound Border Collie mix who looks like he should be standing on a windswept hillside making complicated decisions about livestock. He has the ears. He has the focus. He has the black-and-white formalwear. Unfortunately, we have provided him with no sheep whatsoever, so Kai has been forced to redirect his talents toward more pressing matters—making friends, carrying around toys, and being an exceptionally good boy. He’s about three years old, ridiculously handsome, and has the kind of face that makes you feel like he knows something you don’t.

And Kai loves people. New person walks in? Excellent. Kai was hoping somebody new would show up. He’s confident, social, easygoing, comfortable being handled, and eager to please. He’s also very easy to train, which is fortunate because there is clearly a functioning brain behind those ears. Border Collies were given an unreasonable amount of intelligence, and Kai appears to be using his responsibly. So far.

He’s got one of our favorite kinds of energy: ready when you are. Walk? Absolutely. Yard? Let’s go. Something fun happening? Kai has cleared his calendar. But he also understands that eventually everybody has to go back inside and act like they pay taxes. He enjoys daily walks and moderate activity and adapts well to the rhythm of his household. You get the smart, adventurous dog without having to wake up every morning and provide him with a full-time position at the Department of Agriculture.

Kai also likes other dogs. He’ll wrestle, chase, play tug, and happily join the festivities, but he doesn’t need another dog to entertain him or tell him who he is. Kai knows who Kai is. He can happily have a canine sibling or be your one-and-only. He does well in groups, prefers dogs with a similar play style, and has shown no dog aggression or reactivity. And because apparently his résumé needed another line, he lives with a cat without issue. The cat has presumably reviewed the arrangement and allowed it to continue.

Then we get to the part where Kai becomes almost irritatingly qualified. He’s fully housebroken. Crate trained. Settles calmly in his crate. Walks well on leash. Responds beautifully to redirection. Doesn’t door-dash. Doesn’t try to escape. Isn’t mouthy. He responds well to gentle, positive training and is described as healthy and low-maintenance. Sir, please leave something for the other applicants.

Like plenty of dogs in multi-dog homes, Kai does best having his own space for meals and special treats, so we simply recommend feeding separately from other dogs. Easy enough. Everybody gets their dinner, nobody has to discuss it, and we all reconvene afterward like civilized people.

The funny thing about Kai is that on paper he sounds almost too easy to describe: smart, handsome, friendly, trained, adaptable. But dogs like Kai become so much more than their résumé once they're yours. He’s the dog waiting at the door when you get home. The face in your rearview mirror when you’re headed somewhere fun. The four paws following you into the kitchen because apparently whatever you’re doing in there now requires supervision.

At first, you’ll probably think you got really lucky and adopted a great dog.

And then one day you’ll realize you didn’t just get a great dog. You got Kai.

And those ridiculous ears, that big happy face, and the dog attached to them will have quietly become such a normal part of your life that you won’t quite remember what home felt like without him.

Somebody is going to get one heck of a dog. Kai is just waiting to find out who.

The Truth About Rescue:

Every rescue pup is a work in progress — and thats the beauty of it. None of them come wrapped in a bow, ready-made or mistake-free. They come with stories, quirks, and hearts that have seen a lot but still choose to trust again.

Adoption isn't about perfection; its about presence. Showing up for them, every day, until they know they're finally home. Thats when youll see them bloom — soft and steady — into the very best version of themselves. And somewhere along the way, you'll realize they were never the only one being rescued.

+++++++

Once we have received your application, we will review and reach out to set-up an interview with one of our volunteers! If you have additional questions, please email us at SaintMuttsInquiries@gmail.com.

Note: As with all of our rescues, we recommend homes with children 10 years and over to ensure the best fit for both the pets and families involved.
