8 Pounds of Beard, Underbite & Important Business
Jack is eight pounds of wire-haired Dachshund mix with a scruffy beard, a magnificent underbite, and the general appearance of a tiny man who has been through some things. He looks like he could fix your lawn mower, complain about property taxes, and then ask to be picked up like a baby. We are absolutely obsessed with him.
Born April of this year, Jack is still a young guy, but at only about 8 pounds, we expect him to stay pretty small. Physically, anyway. His personality arrived full-grown, along with the beard, the underbite, and apparently several acres of property he believes require daily inspection.
We call him Jackie, mostly because you cannot look at this face and maintain any level of formality.
Outside, Jackie is an independent man. He has rounds to make. He’ll head off across the yard with his little beard blowing in the breeze because somebody smelled something over by the fence and Jack feels the situation deserves further investigation. He loves exploring new smells, checking out the property, and generally keeping himself informed on local affairs.
He’s also fantastic with other dogs and has absolutely no concept of a weight class. Jack will stroll right up to dogs of all sizes like, “What’s up, big dog? You doing anything later?” If somebody wants to play, he is IN. He’ll romp around, wrestle, happily roll onto his back, and carry on like they’ve known each other for years.
Jack would absolutely love having a pup sibling in his new home. He genuinely enjoys the company of other dogs and is just as eager to get affection from them as he is to play with them. He’s wonderful with kids, too, and seems to have approached life with the general philosophy that strangers are just people and dogs who haven’t loved Jack yet.
But eventually, the property inspection concludes.
And this is when the rugged outdoorsman becomes Jackie Baby. Call “Jackie!” and this little scruffy fool will come RUNNING across the property to get his lovings. Pick him up, flip him onto his back, rub his belly and give him kisses, and he is done. Absolutely useless. Eight pounds of underbite just lying there accepting affection like a Victorian child who has recently inherited a fortune.
This dog loves being held like a baby, which is particularly funny because five minutes earlier he was 40 yards away conducting independent field research.
I have returned from the north pasture. Hold me.
Jack has this wonderful combination of independence and affection. He doesn’t need to be attached to your ankle every second of the day. He’s perfectly happy having a little adventure, playing with the other dogs, and handling whatever Jack Business needs handling that day. But when it’s time for love? Buddy, clear your calendar. Jackie has arrived.
And we really need to discuss his face.
The wire hair. The tiny scruffy beard.
Those little Dachshund features.
And then God gave him THE UNDERBITE.
It was unnecessary.
He was already cute.
Somebody got greedy.
Jack is wonderful with dogs of all sizes, great with kids, playful, curious, confident, affectionate, and the proud owner of one of the best little personalities we’ve had the pleasure of falling completely in love with.
He doesn’t need to be the loudest guy at the party. He’s probably outside checking the perimeter, making friends with a dog 70 pounds heavier than him, and then suddenly remembering: Wait. I have people. And here he comes. Little legs moving. Beard flying. Underbite out.
Jackie is coming home for his belly rubs. Whoever gets to call this ridiculous little gentleman theirs is getting one exceptionally good boy.
Whoever adopts Jackie, congratulations. You're getting approximately eight pounds of dog and 47 pounds of personality
