Avontail - American Shorthair Cat for Adoption in Wheeling, Illinois

Meet Avontail!

Our tiny, high-energy kitten Avontail got her name because she was found in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood, where this tiny kitten had a close call on a busy street.

On Thursday, October 8, 2026, our Executive Director, Jenny, and Mission Advancement staff member, Danielle were driving home from Heartland, heading east on Belmont around 9 p.m., when a tiny kitten darted directly in front of their car. Belmont is a very busy street, and they were amazed she had made it across. They went looking for her in the alley just south of Belmont and about half a block east of Elston. By meowing and listening for her little replies, they managed to track her down.

Jenny had cat food in the car and gave the hungry kitten a meal, but without a trap or carrier, they couldn't catch her that night.

The next evening, around 7 p.m., they returned. After a little searching, Avontail appeared at the very same spot, chirping away happily. This time, she was easy to trap and kept eating even after the trap door closed.

Jenny and Danielle also searched for Avontail's littermates and mother. They spotted an adult cat farther west in the alley, living in a heavily overgrown lot, and plan to return to trap in that area.

What began as a chance encounter on a busy Chicago street has become the beginning of a much better story for this tiny survivor.

Avontail is up-to-date on her FVRCP vaccines.

She has not been spayed yet but it is important to us that all of our animals are fixed and so we ask that you put down a $100 refundable deposit while we schedule a time to spay this sweetie. We will schedule, transport, and ensure she is spayed and then refund you your deposit once completed.

Avontail is currently staying at our Heartland Facility! We are open Thursday 4 pm-7 pm, Friday 4 pm-7 pm, Saturday Noon-6 pm, and Sunday Noon-6 pm. Feel free to stop by to meet her! No appointment necessary.
