Ophelia - Pigeon Bird for Adoption in Chicago, Illinois

OPHELIA

Pigeon
🇺🇸
Chicago, Illinois
September 2nd
unknown, medium, adult

DESCRIPTION

Ophelia is a racing survivor who rescued herself.

Someone was out mowing their lawn when a brown-and-white pigeon turned up and refused to leave. She stayed put through the noise, stayed while they worked, and kept staying until they finally understood she was asking for help. Naming her after Shakespeare’s Ophelia was a joke the bird got the last word on. That Ophelia drowned because nobody was paying attention. This one made absolutely sure someone was.

She came out of the racing industry, which breeds homing pigeons to be driven hundreds of miles from home and released to fly back. She’s finished flying anyone’s races. What’s left is a genuinely relaxed bird. Her foster says she’ll settle into your hands and stay there once she’s decided you’re acceptable. Her preferred activity is sitting on top of a box, supervising. She forages her way around her foster home with real enthusiasm, and when something pleases her she does what her foster calls happy flappies: a burst of hovering, wings going, feet barely off the floor.

She’s dressed for the part! White head speckled with brown, a deep chestnut throat shot through with white, brown-checkered wings, and a long white tail she carries behind her like a train. Give her somewhere safe to forage and something box-shaped to preside over, and she will handle the rest. She always has!
