Jimmies is a piebald domestic pigeon who came into care with a wounded, bruised right wing. Someone found him unable to fend for himself and got him to safety, which for this bird was everything: as a domestic pigeon, Jimmies was never equipped to survive outdoors the way feral street birds are, so being found wasn’t just lucky, it was the difference-maker. He’s recovering now, safe and indoors where he belongs.
He is, it has to be said, a remarkable-looking bird. Jimmies is a patchwork of slate-grey and crisp white splashed together with no particular plan — a white bib and throat, grey saddling his back and wings, a few stray white flecks tossed across the grey like an afterthought. The most distinctive thing about his face is the cere, the fleshy area above the beak, which is unusually full and crinkled, almost cauliflowered — it gives him a characterful, been-around, slightly regal look, like a bird who’d have opinions if you asked.
Which suits the name, when you think about it. Jimmies — as in the rainbow sprinkles — is exactly right for a bird this cheerfully speckled and scattered.
Now recovering and ready for what comes next, Jimmies is after the indoor life he was built for: a warm home, a patient person, and enough spoiling to make up for however he ended up out there alone. Be the one who’s there for him this time, and he’ll be a genuinely singular little companion!
