Joe is a 1-year-old St. Bernard mix with a story that is truly heartbreaking — and a spirit that somehow remains unbelievably gentle despite everything he has endured.
Joe is the sole survivor of a horrific cruelty case. When he was rescued, he was severely underweight, emotionally shut down, and had spent much of his life confined to a crate, forced to live in conditions no dog should ever experience.
Since coming into rescue, Joe has filled out beautifully and is finally at a healthy size and condition. Little by little, he is learning what it means to finally be safe.
And despite every reason in the world not to trust people… Joe still wants to love them.
He is one of the sweetest dogs you could ever hope to meet.
Joe can be timid at first, especially around loud voices or sudden movements, and he will sometimes cower if a man raises his voice. It is clear that life was not kind to him before rescue. But if you give him even a little patience and a moment to realize he is safe, Joe quickly starts seeking out affection like he is trying to make up for all the love he missed out on.
Once he relaxes, his sweet personality starts shining through. He leans into pets, looks for reassurance, and quietly stays close to the people he trusts.
Joe is currently being evaluated by our canine behaviorist partners at CNY Canine Academy, and first impressions have been incredibly positive. While he may be shy initially, he is affectionate, gentle, and eager to connect. During introductions with a dog-neutral dog on site, Joe immediately offered a play bow and showed friendly social behavior, which bodes very well for his future interactions with other dogs.
Because Joe spent much of his life confined to a crate without proper care, he is still learning house training. Thankfully, he has been doing extremely well when kept on a consistent schedule and continues to make wonderful progress every day.
More than anything, Joe needs a family who understands that healing takes time. He deserves patient people, soft beds, full meals, kind voices, and the chance to finally experience the life every dog should have had from the beginning.
After everything he survived, Joe did not become hardened or angry.
He became gentle.
If You’re Thinking About Adopting Me, I Think You Should Know
I’m still learning that the world can be safe and that people can be kind. Loud voices can scare me sometimes, and I may need a minute to feel comfortable, but once I do, all I want is love and reassurance. I’ve missed out on a lot in my life, so now I’m making up for it one cuddle, one meal, and one kind human at a time. I’m a very good boy who just wants a chance to finally be somebody’s beloved dog.
Important Adoption Information and Next Steps:
All animals adopted through the Oswego County SPCA (OCAWL) are:
Spayed or neutered
Up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations
Microchipped prior to adoption
Cats are FeLV/FIV tested, and dogs are heartworm tested (if age-appropriate).
Our animals are cared for in loving foster homes — they are not housed in a shelter environment.
We review all applications thoroughly to ensure the best match for both animal and adopter.
Our adoption fees help cover the cost of veterinary care, food, and rescue operations so we can continue saving animals throughout Oswego County.
To apply to adopt, please visit www.oswegocountyspca.org and complete our adoption application.
After Submitting Your Application:
Please make sure you have notified your veterinarian that we will be calling and that it is okay to speak with us. If you do not currently have a vet, please determine which one you will be using and set up care in advance so we can confirm your new pet will receive medical attention when needed.
For Pets Already in the Home:
Because the number of homeless animals in our area is so large, we adopt only to homes where current pets are spayed or neutered, with documented medical exceptions. We also require that all resident pets be up to date on their vaccinations to help ensure that everyone — both new and existing family members — stays healthy and safe.
Keep in Mind:
We are 100 percent foster-based and 100 percent volunteer-operated, from the top down. Our team works hard to get animals into their forever homes as quickly as possible. Please be patient with us — but if you do not hear back within a few days, feel free to message us on our Facebook page to confirm your application went through.
