Dog’s Name: Harvey
Breed: Poodle type
Weight: 16 pounds
Gender: Male
Spayed/neutered: Yes
Age: Probably between 1.5 – 2 years old
Reason for Intake: Picked up as stray (close to a Mennonite farm)
Medical (shots etc): Yes
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: I don’t have cats but someone before us said he loves cats
Good with kids unknown but yes would likely be good with kids
Good with strangers: Yes
Guarding issues: None
Ever bitten a human: No
Ever bitten a dog: No
Behavioural issues: None
House trained: He came to us not housetrained, but he is close to perfect with this now.
Crate trained: We do not use a crate with him.
Destructive when left alone: No
Barks when left alone: He barks for a few minutes when he wants to go with us. Then he sleeps until we return. But if he’s already had his walk, he doesn’t bark, just sleeps while we are away.
Leash skills: He’s pretty good on the leash, gets excited to smell all the smells so he will pull sometimes to smell. He doesn’t care about seeing other people on a walk, but he does care about seeing other dogs and wants to get to them and barks. We’re working on this but with the weather/neuter etc there hasn’t been a whole lot of dog crossing situations.
Handling issues: He loves to be touched and doesn’t mind any part of himself being touched, including his paws.
Known commands: He is deaf so we use hand signals for him. He now knows to be polite and sit for things that he wants such as a toy or his food or to go out the door for a walk. Working on ‘lay down’ signal and his ‘come’ signal. He is good with his “go outside to pee” signal. Definitely a trainable little fellow.
Food on now: He eats Canadian Naturals Turkey & Salmon dog food and is a good eater. He gets fed at 8am and at 5pm and always eats all his food. He gets fed in a tumbler ball or a snuffle mat. He knows to sit and be calm and not to rush to his food until given the signal. And he loves every dog treat he has been given.
Medical issues: None except he is completely deaf.
Personality, likes/dislikes: He is such a happy boy, he loves walks, loves car rides, loves being with his people and always wants to be in the same room with us. No aggressiveness or meanness in this little guy. He loves to chew dogs bones, and he loves to pick at and put holes in stuffed toys.
Best home scenario: It would be great if his family had experience with deaf dogs. He would love a home with a fenced yard as this is the one big concern with a deaf dog – recall. Harvey is led by his nose outside and although he never tries to get out of his fenced in area, he would follow a scent if he was off a lead and he wouldn’t hear someone calling him back. Lots of things seem new to Harvey and he needs naps after his sniffaris and happily takes them so someone working away from home part time would be fine with him. He’d be good in a family with other pets or without. Being deaf, he doesn’t startle at unexpected or loud noises so certain apartment living situations could work for him or townhouse with fenced yard. His family would be one or two people, or more if there isn’t too much coming and going where he could possibly get outside without someone noticing. He goes for short walks and loves them but they are relatively short and he seems happy with that because there’s so much to smell on the way. I’m a big walker but don’t take him on long walks as it would be too much for him.
His family would have to go slow with him as everything seems new and he can get overtired if there is too much new stimulation.
We’ve had Harvey for over 6 weeks now and he has learned our routine – up at 6:30am and out to pee/poop. Cuddles, dog bone chewing and then breakfast. After breakfast, he goes out again and might nap when he can but keeps his eyes on us to make sure he’s in the same room. Then he follows us around and is waiting for some fun such as a walk or playing. Then nap. Then he will play by himself, plays with his ball or toy or bone and runs around just playing. So funny to watch him. I try to play catch with him but he wants to just play by himself with his toys. Then nap. Then his dinner and then relaxes on one of his dog beds while we eat. Then he chews his dog bone until 7:30 and then he falls asleep. Always have to wake him up to go out to pee/poop before bed. I feel that he is puppy like in the way that he definitely needs his sleep.
He’s a fantastic little guy and it’ll be hard to see him go.
