Introducing Licorice. Licorice is part of our Sweet Temptations litter, and he seems committed to living up to the name. He’s a sweet, happy-go-lucky little guy with the cheerful energy of someone who has never paid a bill, met a bad day, or been told the treat jar is empty. Licorice is a 14-week-old, 9-pound male Poodle possibly mixed with Havanese, Schnauzer, or some other small breed we are wildly unqualified to identify. Listen, we know Great Pyrenees. We know how to step over a sleeping polar bear in the hallway and how to retrieve our entire arm from a fluffy iceberg when they fall asleep on it. Then these tiny babies arrived, and we found ourselves staring down at Licorice thinking, “What the heck are we supposed to do with you? Put you in a purse? Dress you in a little outfit? We estimate he’ll stay around or under 30 pounds—if he even makes it that far. On the bright side, if you live with one of our large-breed fluffy icebergs, you could probably bring Licorice home, and your partner wouldn’t even notice. He’d fit under the resident polar bear with room to spare. We are not suggesting you hide a dog from your partner. We are simply observing that the logistics look promising.

Licorice is part of our Sweet Temptations litter, and his foster says he is the sweetest and most loving of the bunch. Imagine being surrounded by puppies named after candy and still winning the sweetness contest. He is a happy-go-lucky little guy who loves to run around and play, then comes looking for someone to cuddle when his batteries run low. His schedule is essentially: have fun, be adorable, locate a lap, repeat. The lap does not have to be large. As previously discussed, neither is he. Licorice enjoys the other puppies and is the life of the party, though his foster says he is also one of the gentlest and chillest pups in the group. He is the friend who happily joins the festivities but does not insist everyone stay out until 2 a.m. His energy sits around a 5 out of 10. He likes to play and loves toys, but he also knows the value of a good snuggle. Another dog could be a fun companion for him, but his foster thinks he could do well in any loving home. Cats and children are unknown, as he has not been around either in his foster home. He also has not had much opportunity to meet new people yet, though his foster expects this sweet puppy would do fine. Licorice has not, to our knowledge, been keeping a secret list of people he disapproves of. He enjoys toys but has no interest in fetch. From Licorice’s perspective, if you throw a toy across the room, you have made a decision, and he respects your right to live with it. He is also not interested in playing in water. Perhaps he has seen what happens to a fluffy little dog when wet and would prefer that particular before-and-after reveal remain a mystery.
Licorice’s foster thinks he would be happy as either an adventure buddy or a homebody. He can enjoy some activity and then settle in for cuddles, which is a wonderfully flexible approach to life when your legs are approximately the length of breadsticks. He could do well with a securely fenced yard, but his foster also believes an apartment or a home without a fence could work with regular outings. He has not started leash walks yet, so his future family will need to introduce him to the strange human custom of attaching a string to a dog and announcing that everyone is going outside together. Car rides are another part of puppy life he is still learning. Licorice needs help getting into the vehicle because the distance from the ground to a car seat is, from his point of view, a serious mountaineering expedition. We cannot promise he will eventually leap into the car with the confidence of a movie stunt dog, but we feel reasonably certain loading nine pounds of Licorice will not require the team of engineers we sometimes need for our larger residents. At 14 weeks old, he is still working on the basics. Licorice is not potty trained yet and does not know any commands. He will need a family willing to teach him patiently and celebrate the little victories, such as going potty in the right place and learning that “sit” is an instruction rather than an interesting sound humans make. He currently sleeps in an exercise pen with his siblings and stays there when his foster is away. We assume they spend those hours holding tiny meetings, redistributing toys, and discussing which human seems most likely to hand out extra snacks. So far, Licorice has not shown food or resource guarding, fears, escape attempts, inappropriate chewing, or any other mischievous behaviors. His foster thinks he may bark casually, which seems fair. He is a dog, even if he is roughly the size of one of our Pyrenees’ paws. He does not get on the couch in his foster home, though anyone who has met a cuddly puppy knows the seating policy may eventually come under review.
Licorice’s ideal home is one where he can grow up loved, learn the basics, play with his toys, and cuddle with people who appreciate just how special this little guy is. He may be the gentlest of his puppy crew, but he is still a puppy: he will need time, guidance, potty training, leash practice, and a family willing to help him figure out the world beyond the exercise pen. In return, you get a sweet, cheerful companion who can make a game out of an ordinary afternoon and then fall asleep close to you as though that was his plan all along. If your home is missing a tiny fluff-covered sweetheart with the social skills of a party host and the snuggling instincts of a heated blanket, Licorice may be your boy. We came into this convinced we had no idea what to do with a dog who could fit under one of our usual dogs. Then Licorice climbed into someone’s arms, settled in for a cuddle, and made the answer embarrassingly obvious: love him.
