Ivar is a 3-year-old, 70-pound Shepherd/Pyrenees mix who came to us as part of a group of surrendered dogs. He is beautiful, calm and exceptionally sweet, although he is still a little bewildered by the sudden change in his circumstances. Frankly, this seems entirely reasonable.
Ivar is not a shy dog, but he is also not the social chairman. He does not want to work the room, entertain strangers or live in a house where everyone communicates by shouting from opposite ends of it. He would prefer a calm, respectful home with someone who has enough dog experience to approach him with quiet confidence. He is very teachable and responds beautifully when treated like the intelligent, thoughtful dog he is.
He is good with other dogs, provided they do not immediately launch themselves at his head, and he is fine with cats. Older children who have moved beyond the screeching stage would also be perfectly suitable. Ivar rides well in the car, walks nicely on a leash and is housebroken. He is already considerably better behaved than my college boyfriend was.
Ivar is not a running fiend that requires a fenced yard, and a committed leash-walking home would be just fine. This is not a ringing endorsement that he is OK off leash, because he is not. He is looking for people who appreciate a quieter dog and who understand that devotion does not always arrive wearing a party hat.
