Meet Darwin! Darwin is a sweet, 3 and a half year old, 13 lb Miniature Dachshund.
This little guy was picked up as a stray in Texas and brought into a small shelter. When they scanned him for a microchip, they were able to track down his original owner, who shared that she had rehomed him over a year ago. Unfortunately, the person he was rehomed to never responded to the shelter’s attempts to contact them, leaving Darwin without anyone to claim him.
We knew this happy, deserving boy needed a fresh start, so we stepped in and got him a ticket to Colorado. Now safe and cared for, Darwin is ready to leave his past behind and begin a brand new chapter with a loving forever family.
Darwin is a gorgeous, sweet boy, who charms everyone he meets. He gets along great with other dogs, and is friendly with people. With his classic Dachshund looks and silly personality, he’ll make a wonderful companion for someone ready to give him the love and stability he deserves.
We don't know if Darwin has had any formal training. A (virtual or in-person) positive reinforcement group training class promotes great behavior, bonding and confidence for a young dog whose self-esteem will fly high while he masters his skills. Training is so important in the future behaviors of every dog. It's for this reason that we're unwilling to adopt to a family that doesn't make this loving choice.
Farfel's is happy to provide a list of both in-person and virtual positive reinforcement / force- free trainers in your area.
Our training requirement is to help every adoption be successful.
Darwin has been fully vetted, is up to date on his vaccines, heartworm negative, and neutered.
Farfel's Rescue is a fully foster based rescue, and offers a one week trial with every adoption. We feel that this is much more beneficial to not only the dog, but the adopter too. We believe that only getting 20-30 minutes with a dog before deciding on a lifetime commitment is not a fair amount of time to the adopter, or the dog. Therefore we give adopters one week with the dog to assure it is the right fit, and offer a full refund of their adoption fee should it not workout within the week trial.
Farfel's Rescue has been doing adoptions this way since 2005 and is thrilled to adopt out ~400 dogs each year.

ABOUT: DACHSHUND DOG BREED
The dachshund is a small dog breed known for its long body, short legs, and distinctive appearance. Originally bred for hunting badgers, these playful and loyal dogs make loving companions for families. Dachshunds come in three coat varieties smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired each with its own unique charm. Despite their size, dachshunds are bold and courageous, with a curious nature that can sometimes lead to mischief. Their endearing personality and adaptability make them popular pets worldwide.
Farfel’s Farm & Rescue was founded on the idea that each dog deserves a loving home and the chance for a happy life. We are so thrilled to be able to rescue these amazing dogs from urgent situations in Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas and Cancun, Mexico.
Working with a dedicated team of volunteers, the dogs are pulled from high-kill shelters because they’ve been recognized for the gifts they will bring to a loving family.
They are then transported by specially licensed vans to Colorado for a second chance at life. The dogs are evaluated and treated for any medical issues before being transitioned to their new family, where they can become accustomed to having a family’s love, a warm bed and plenty of healthy food!
