When Mama Bear arrived at Take Paws Rescue with her newborn puppies, she was barely hanging on. She was severely underweight, covered in fleas and ticks, suffering from hemorrhagic diarrhea, and doing everything she could to care for her babies despite having almost nothing left to give. Still just a puppy herself, Bear never stopped putting her little family first.
As Mama Bear slowly began to heal, her puppies started to thrive. Then everything changed.
The family was hit with a devastating parasite burden that left several puppies fighting for their lives. Despite every effort to save him, we heartbreakingly lost little Smokey. Soon after, Yogi became critically ill and was rushed to the emergency veterinarian, where he required hospitalization, extensive diagnostics, IV fluids, medications, and around-the-clock care. There were moments when we weren't sure he would make it.
Thankfully, Yogi beat the odds. He returned home to Mama Bear and his siblings, Baloo, Paddington and Winnie the Pooh. Today he is growing stronger every day. With proper nutrition, excellent veterinary care, and an abundance of love, all of Mama Bear's remaining puppies are now thriving.
Soon, her babies will leave the nest to begin lives with families of their own.
And for the first time in her young life, Mama Bear will have the chance to be someone's baby.
Mama Bear deserves nothing less than the wonderful life she's never known. She is affectionate, incredibly intelligent, eager to please, and learns new commands with impressive speed. She is wonderful with people of all ages and gets along beautifully with other dogs. While she hasn't been tested with cats, we think she would likely do well with a proper introduction.
Bear can be a little timid when meeting new people, a reminder of the life she left behind. She may cower at first, but once she realizes she is safe and loved, she will become your most loyal shadow and steadfast companion. She is housebroken, comfortable in a crate but doesn't require one, and happiest simply being by your side.
Too often, the adorable puppies are adopted quickly while the devoted mama is left waiting. We hope that won't be Bear's story.
She has spent her entire life putting everyone else first. Now it's her turn to be chosen.
Mama Bear will be up to date on her vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed before adoption. All she needs now is a family willing to see beyond her past and recognize the extraordinary dog she has always been.
Could that family be yours?
