Meet the Veggie Patch!
Tomato, Chili Pepper, Butterbean, Field Pea & Sweet Potato may have grown up together, but these five little vegetables have developed VERY different personalities. They're cat friendly, dog friendly, kid friendly, and have been raised right in the middle of a busy foster home. And because these babies have never known life without feline companionship, they must be adopted in pairs or into a home with a friendly resident cat.
Whether you're looking for a professional cuddler, an independent little lady, a social butterfly, a certified wild child, or a quiet companion who likes to keep tabs on you from across the room, there's something growing in this garden for just about everyone.
TOMATO — The Independent Thinker
Tomato approaches life on her own terms. She's curious, observant, mischievous and fiercely independent. She loves exploring every nook and cranny, but with people, she prefers to conduct a thorough background check before committing.
Give Tomato her space and let her make the decisions, and one evening you'll suddenly realize that the little girl who kept her distance is pressed right against your side. She makes you earn her trust — which makes winning it that much sweeter.
She also has a particularly sweet friendship with Chili Pepper.
CHILI PEPPER — The Quiet Observer
Beautiful, fluffy Chili Pepper is the honorary sibling of the Veggie Patch — and she's a girl who likes to take her time.
At first, you might think she's aloof. Then you'll start noticing something.
She's... everywhere you are.
Feel like someone is watching you? It's Chili Pepper. She's in the doorway, under the chair, or perched somewhere above you quietly supervising. Sit on the couch and give her a little time, and before long she'll appear and settle nearby for a nap.
She especially loves other cats, and her friendship with Tomato is particularly sweet.
FIELD PEA — The Baby Girl
Field Pea is a professional cuddler who comes running the second you walk into the room. Her greatest joy is being scooped into your arms and receiving approximately 100 kisses all over her face.
This gorgeous tuxedo girl is affectionate, playful, gentle, demanding and occasionally quite loud about what she wants. She was also the last kitten to give up her bottle — and she did NOT go willingly. To this day, she loves making biscuits and dreaming about the good old days when milk was served on demand.
SWEET POTATO — The Everybody's Friend
Sweet Potato has never met a stranger. This confident, cuddly boy loves everyone and is perfectly happy being scooped up and loved on by just about anybody.
Sweet Pot was the first of the litter to open his eyes, the first to eat real food, and has always been the biggest of the bunch. He's also quite the provider, proudly bringing his humans the treasures he's "hunted" — including hair ties and cotton balls.
His favorite creature in the world is his twin brother Butterbean. If they're not sleeping together, they're probably somewhere cooking up trouble.
BUTTERBEAN — The Party Animal
Ohhhh, Butterbean.
This boy has been a wild child from the beginning. He's rambunctious, cheeky, curious, fearless and firmly convinced that wherever the action is, Butterbean should be directly in the middle of it.
He loves a party, can't keep his paws to himself, and when he wants affection, he'll purr, rub against your legs and make his demands VERY clear until you scoop him up and shower him with kisses.
Butterbean is utterly obsessed with Sweet Potato. The boys were once nearly impossible to tell apart, but these days there's another reliable method:
Butterbean is probably the wilder one.
How This Little Garden Grew
Tomato, Butterbean, Field Pea and Sweet Potato came to the Columbus-Lowndes Animal Shelter when they were only about six days old. Their mother had sadly passed away, and a caring local heard her tiny kittens crying and brought them to safety.
A few weeks later, along came Chili Pepper. She had been found alone at a gas station at around three weeks old. She joined the bottle babies and folded herself right into the family. Biology or not, as far as these kittens are concerned, Chili Pepper is one of them.
The Veggie Patch has grown up in a home with three adult cats, a French bulldog, a boxer, a large mixed-breed dog, and kids, making them wonderfully accustomed to a busy household and four-legged friends of all shapes and sizes.
Now they're ready to start leaving the garden — but nobody leaves without a feline friend.
They can be adopted in pairs, or individually to homes that already have a friendly resident cat. And if you're having trouble choosing two, we certainly won't stop you from picking three.
Five kittens. Five completely different personalities. One very special little Veggie Patch.
Which one — or two — are you picking from the garden?
Everybody loves kittens, and it's easy to see why! Kittens four months old or younger are only adopted out in pairs or to homes that already have a friendly, playful resident cat. Young kittens simply do not thrive in isolation, and we do not make exceptions. If you're looking for a single cat, please look to our older kittens, teens, or adults. They're wonderful companions and fully ready to be your one-and-only.
All of the Sweet Paws animals are loved a great deal by their rescuers, fosters, and the volunteers who've cared for them along the way. Your kitten will be up to date on appropriate vaccinations by adoption day, but please keep in mind that kittens require multiple routine vet visits throughout the course of their first year. Sweet Paws is staffed by volunteers, and processing applications is time intensive; therefore, we ask that you only submit an application if you are fully committed to adopting.
