Pigeon

DESCRIPTION

Stitch was bred to race, and racing nearly killed her. Somewhere between a release point and the loft she was supposed to fly back to, she got lost. Not for an afternoon. Long enough that by the time she was found — still under a year old, a kid by any measure — she was dangerously underweight, running on fumes and stubbornness. This is the part of the sport nobody puts on the leaderboard. Racing pigeons are carried hundreds of miles from home and released to find their own way back, and the ones who don't make it are simply gone. They're domestic birds. They can't live on the streets, they can't forage their way out of trouble, and a lost racer is usually a dying one.

Stitch's foster family got the weight back on her. They also got her spirit back, which took longer. She wears the name well, though not the way you'd expect. The Disney Stitch is blue and small and a walking disaster. Ours is blue and small and the calmest bird in the room: a soft slate-grey wing shield scattered with black checks, a deep charcoal head and breast, coral-red feet, and a pale heart-shaped cere sitting above her beak like punctuation. Her fosters describe her as gentle and unbothered, easy to pick up, easy to sit with. She loafs. She watches. She has no notes for you.

The other thing she has in common with her namesake: she was an experiment somebody else designed, and she turned out to be somebody's family instead. Stitch needs an indoor home or a fully predator-proof aviary — she can never be released, and she isn't equipped to survive outdoors. Beyond that she's a genuinely low-maintenance bird. If your household has room for a quiet blue survivor who's already decided she's done with long-distance travel, apply to adopt Stitch through Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue!
