Nichole is a fancy Pouter! Pouters are bred for one showstopping trick: they inflate the crop — the pouch in the chest where a pigeon stores food — puffing it into a big round balloon and standing tall and proud behind it. It is a whole personality in a posture. So when Nichole spent several days sitting in a yard waiting to be rescued, unbothered and glad of the fuss, that tracked. Here was a bird built to be admired, in no hurry to leave before the admiring was done.
Why they were out there matters, though. A fancy Pouter like Nichole was never made for life outdoors; domestic pigeons cannot fend for themselves the way feral street birds do, so those quiet days in the yard were riskier than their calm let on. Happily, they are safe now, indoors, and getting the care they need.
And they are a genuinely striking bird. Nichole is clean white nearly all over, with one rich chestnut-brown patch sweeping up the side of the neck like a scarf thrown on at a rakish angle, plus a faint dusting of the same warm color across the back. Best of all are the feet: Nichole has feathered leggings, soft white plumes trailing right down over the toes, so this is a bird who came pre-dressed for the occasion.
Nichole is looking for the indoor life they were always meant for: somewhere safe, comfortable, and full of the attention they puff up so nicely for. Bring your admiration. They're ready to be somebody's proud, well-dressed little balloon.
