Minnow - Shepherd Dog for Adoption in Petersburg, Virginia

Minnow is a shepherd mix puppy, female, about 5 months old. She is black through the coat with a white blaze down her chest and four white feet, ears that still flop forward, and legs she has not caught up to yet.

She came in as a stray, picked up in the 1200 block of Halifax Street, so everything we can tell you about her comes from watching her here rather than from any history.

She is already in the 35 to 45 pound range at 5 months old, and that is the least she will ever weigh. Minnow is a big puppy and she is going to be a big dog, so the right home is planning for the adult she grows into and not only the puppy in the photos.

Sweet and playful are the first two words anyone reaches for with her. She comes over to people on her own, she takes a treat gently, she sits when she is asked, and she is happy to be handled and fussed over.

She likes other dogs and she would like a friend, and what she wants is a calm and confident one. Dogs who come on strong make her careful, and she does much better next to a dog who is friendly and steady about the whole thing. Paired right, she is a puppy who will follow another dog around and copy everything it does.

She has not been around cats or children that we know of, so those stay open questions, and slow supervised introductions are the way to answer them.

At 5 months she is very much a puppy. House training, chewing, and a great deal of growing left to do. It is also the age where everything you teach her lands, so a family who signs her up for a class and keeps her busy is going to end up with a very good dog.

She has a lot of growing up ahead of her, and a home is a far better place to do it than a kennel.

We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability.
