Walker is such a gentleman! He came to us from our shelter partner in rural Alabama. Back in February, he was found in a crate on an abandoned property, and taken to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. They have over 20,000 animals in their care and adopters are few and far between. The staff there know that sweet, friendly dogs like Walker have a much better chance of meeting adopters here in the Chicago area, so he hitched a ride to Heartland!

We know that sometimes it's hard to get an idea of a dog's personality through photos alone, but that is not the case with Walker. He is just as he looks: easygoing, gentle, and warm. Walker hasn't been with us very long, so we're still getting to know him, but we do know he's friendly with dogs and people alike, takes treats very gently, and loves long walks (his name is fitting!).

One thing to know about Walker is that he can come across as very shy when first meeting him. The Walker in his videos, full of bounciness, playfulness, and all-smiles is the truest version of Walker! Walker loves playing with his dog friends, so we think the few extra LBs he needs to shed will come right off...!

If you think you'd like to get to know him too, come in during open hours or email and ask about him!

Walker's adoption fee is $300. This animal is spayed/neutered and up to date on core vaccines.

Like many dogs who come to us from the South, Walker tested positive for heartworm disease. The good news is that heartworm is treatable, and he will receive her treatment through us.

Heartworm disease is common in dogs throughout the United States. It is a mosquito-borne disease and is not contagious to humans or other pets.

Heartworm disease is both preventable and curable. Once cured, a normal quality of life can be expected.

Walker will receive three injections to treat his Heartworm (the first one will be on 8/25/26, with the next two on 9/22 and 9/23). All treatments will take place at our shelter with our veterinarian.

That will complete the treatment, but he will need a quick retest at the adopter's vet 9 months post-treatment to make sure that he is Heartworm-free.

ABOUT: MIXED BREED DOG BREED

The mixed breed dogs, often referred to as mutts, are a diverse and unique group with a blend of different characteristics from various purebred dog breeds. These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.
