We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs. IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply. If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board. We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog.
Sully (Sullivan), 1.5 years old, neutered male, Chocolate Labrador Mix, 52 pounds. He is in a foster home in Houston, Texas.
Sully and another dog were living on the streets of Houston. A kind woman who was also homeless had been caring for these dogs. She would use her little resources to feed, provide shelter and love. A networker connected with her and assisted in finding rescues for Sully and his friend!
Sully is a 52-pound bundle of fun, personality, and pure puppy-like enthusiasm who is discovering just how wonderful life in a loving home can be. He is playful, social, affectionate, and absolutely loves being around his people and other dogs.
Sully is the kind of dog who sees a new friend and immediately thinks, “LET’S PLAY!” He can get pretty excited when meeting dogs and may greet them with a loud, enthusiastic bark, but there is no aggression behind it—he simply wants to make friends and get the party started. He has successfully interacted with dogs ranging from 15 to 65 pounds and recently passed his doggy daycare evaluation. He loves to romp and play, and he is learning to recognize and respect when another dog is ready for a break.
One of Sully's foster family's favorite things has been watching him learn how to be a dog in a home. In the beginning, it was clear that he hadn't had much experience with the comforts of home. Now he's discovering couches, beds, toys, and the joy of relaxing with his people. He's becoming increasingly cuddly and affectionate, and it's been incredibly sweet watching him come out of his shell.
Sully LOVES toys and has solid moderate energy. He enjoys a good walk, playtime with his dog friends, and being part of the family—but once he's gotten his exercise, he's happy to settle down and relax with his people and canine crew. He would thrive in an active home that enjoys getting outside, playing, and keeping an energetic young dog engaged.
He does well on walks and has been learning to walk nicely on leash with his foster family. His reaction to other dogs on leash can vary—sometimes he completely ignores them, while other times he gets excited and wants to say hello. His foster family keeps him moving and redirects him, and he does well once they continue on their walk.
Sully is also doing well with his house and crate training. He has had no accidents in his foster home and is comfortable in his crate for 4–5 hours at a time. He enjoys a good Benebone and apparently believes entering his crate should always come with a snack. We can't say we blame him!
He has shown no food, treat, or toy guarding and takes treats nicely, even around the other dogs. He has also been around a 3-year-old child. He can be very excited, jumpy, and barky when first meeting younger children, so he would do best with older, dog-savvy children who are comfortable around energetic dogs. Supervision and continued work on his manners will be important.
Sully has not lived with cats, although he has seen outdoor cats without showing much interest. Because of his playful, energetic nature, we think he could be a little too enthusiastic for a cat, so a slow and carefully supervised introduction would be needed in a cat home.
Sully is still learning some important manners. He can jump and bark when excited and is working on counter surfing, but he's making progress with consistency and redirection. He already knows “down” and is eager to learn more.
And then there's Sully's relationship with his 15-pound foster sister—a tiny Schnauzer diva who made it very clear that she was NOT interested in his play invitations. Sully has learned to respect her boundaries, and somehow this 52-pound boy has accepted that she is absolutely the boss. He takes it like a champ!
Sully's ideal home
Sully would love an active, loving family who will make him a true member of the family and continue helping him learn. A playful, dog-friendly canine companion would be wonderful, but he could also thrive as an only dog with regular opportunities for doggy playdates. Because of his enthusiastic play style, a very small or delicate dog may not be the best match.
Most of all, Sully needs a family committed to him for life—one who understands that he's still learning, will celebrate his progress, and will give him the structure, exercise, affection, and patience he needs to thrive.
Sully has so much love to give, and his foster family absolutely adores him. Now he's ready to find the people who will adore him just as much.
If you're looking for a happy, playful, affectionate dog who is ready to be your adventure buddy and best friend, Sully may be your guy.
Please note our process starts with an application. If we think you might be a good fit, we will reach out to coordinate a phone interview. This is followed by a video call with the foster home. Virtual home visit, personal and vet reference checks are required to complete the process. Transport is included in our adoption donation.
