We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog.

Freddy, 3.5 years old, neutered male, Retriever mix, 68 pounds. He is in a foster home in San Antonio, Texas and can transport once an adopter is approved.

Meet Freddy—the sweetest shadow you will ever have!

Freddy's favorite place is right beside his person. He bonds deeply with his humans and is happiest when he can be part of whatever they are doing. Once he settles next to you, he is remarkably calm and content—an affectionate, reassuring presence who simply wants to be close.

Freddy is also a wonderful walking companion. He walks gently on a leash without pulling, enjoys exploring, and is curious without being reactive or overly excited. He has done well with children, adults, and other dogs, and his foster family describes him as deeply loving and gentle.

This smart boy is treat-motivated and eager to learn. He quickly mastered sit and down and continues to make great progress with new skills. His enthusiasm occasionally gets the best of him at mealtimes and when his favorite humans return home, but his foster family is helping him practice calmer greetings—and he is catching on quickly.

One of Freddy’s biggest strengths is how calm and nonreactive he is around other dogs. He does well with the dogs in his foster home and has been wonderful meeting dogs in public. At a wakeboard park, he calmly watched a dog nearby barking, lunging, and pulling on leash without reacting at all. He has also done well at adoption events, and his shelter behavioral assessment noted his positive behavior around other dogs.

Freddy has also been working incredibly hard on his crate skills. He now goes into his crate willingly, especially because he knows that's where he gets his meals. He may bark and paw at the crate when first enclosed, particularly when his people are nearby, but he is learning to settle. His foster family uses a camera to monitor him while they are away, and once they leave, Freddy is able to calm himself and settle.

If you are looking for an affectionate, devoted companion who will happily walk beside you and then settle quietly at your feet, Freddy may be your perfect match. His foster family loves him very much—and they know his future family will, too!

Freddy has gone on lots of outings outside the foster home and his general approach to new experiences seems to be: Oh, were doing this today? Cool. Im in. He is very laid back out in public.

Freddy does not need another dog in the home, but will do great if there is one. He will do best with someone who is not gone all day to continue to build his self confidence for time alone (which is important for all of us). He really just wants to be a part of all the fun.

Please note our process starts with an application. If we think you might be a good fit, we will reach out to coordinate a phone interview. This is followed by a video call with the foster home. Virtual home visit, personal and vet reference checks are required to complete the process. Transport is included in our adoption donation.
