Meet Stuart — Proof That the Best Chapters Can Come Later
Stuart is a happy little Shih Tzu who may be around 10 years old, but apparently no one has told him he's a senior! This sweet little guy is full of life, energy, and spunk. He is friendly and outgoing, loves going for walks, and is very food motivated. Stuart gets along well with other dogs, cats, and kids and is thoroughly enjoying everything his new life has to offer.
Sadly, life wasn't always so kind to Stuart. He came to us after suffering from long-term neglect, and his condition showed just how important routine care is for every dog. Stuart had severe dental disease, an oral tumor, a fractured jaw, flea dermatitis, ear infections, skin allergies, and extensive matting.
His damaged teeth needed to be removed because of the severity of his dental disease. Thankfully, the oral tumor was biopsied and came back benign. It also took a lot of time, treatment, and consistent care to finally get his painful, itchy skin under control.
And look at him now!
Stuart's hair has grown back, and he has discovered just how wonderful life can be when you aren't uncomfortable and itchy all the time. He currently receives monthly Cytopoint injections to manage his skin allergies and is doing very well with them. His future family will need to be committed to continuing his veterinary care and monitoring his allergies so he can remain comfortable.
As a Shih Tzu, Stuart will also require regular professional grooming along with routine brushing and coat care at home. Grooming isn't simply about making a dog look nice. Keeping the coat clean and free of mats is an important part of keeping the skin healthy and preventing discomfort and infections.
Stuart's past is also an important reminder that responsible dog ownership means much more than providing food and a place to sleep. Dogs depend entirely on us for regular veterinary care, dental care, parasite prevention, grooming, proper nutrition, exercise, and attention to changes in their health. Problems that may begin small can become painful and serious when left untreated.
Adopting a senior dog also means being prepared for the medical needs that can come with aging. Stuart deserves a family who understands that commitment and will make his health and comfort a priority for the rest of his life.
After everything he's been through, Stuart hasn't lost his love for people or his enthusiasm for life. He's simply happy to feel good, take his walks, enjoy his food, make friends, and soak up all the attention he missed for far too long.
Stuart doesn't need anyone to feel sorry for him. He needs someone who will make sure that the rest of his life is every bit as good as he's discovering life can be.
