Don't let the serious face fool you! Atlas is a softie.
Born around September 2024 and weighing approximately 60 pounds, Atlas is a handsome Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Terrier-type mix with a strong, athletic build, soulful eyes and a personality that's much softer than his distinguished expression might suggest.
As with many rescue dogs, Atlas's breed is our best educated guess based on his appearance and characteristics. We don't have DNA results, so whatever combination created this handsome fellow remains one of life's little mysteries.
Atlas can be shy when he first meets someone new. He's not necessarily going to barrel into the room and immediately declare you his lifelong best friend. Give him a little time to observe, get comfortable and decide everything is okay, though, and you'll discover an incredibly sweet, loving boy underneath that initial reserve.
And once Atlas relaxes, that sweet side really shines.
One of our favorite videos of Atlas captures him happily interacting with one of his caregivers, Haylie. His tail is wagging away while he soaks up the attention and gives her kisses all over her face. That's the Atlas we know: affectionate, gentle and genuinely happy to be loved once he feels comfortable with you.
Serious face. Soft heart. And apparently quite a lot of kisses.
Atlas is medium-to-high energy and would do best with a family that can give him regular exercise, playtime and opportunities to keep that young brain busy. He walks well on leash and is excellent in his crate.
He currently spends much of his time outdoors and sleeps overnight in a crate in our climate-controlled dog RV, so Atlas hasn't had extensive experience living full-time inside a traditional home. His adopter should expect to give him some guidance with housetraining and household manners while he adjusts.
We don't see this as a concern, just something he hasn't had much opportunity to learn yet. Atlas is young, intelligent and very capable of learning a new routine with consistency and patience.
Atlas currently shares an outdoor dog run with his brother and another male dog and does very well with his canine companions. As with all of our dogs, we recommend slow, responsible introductions when meeting new dogs. We would use particular caution with dominant or alpha-type male dogs and would not consider that personality type an ideal match for Atlas.
For cats, we're recommending a cat-free home.
Atlas hasn't had enough firsthand experience with children for us to confidently label him as a dog who has been kid tested. Based on the temperament we've seen, however, we think a home with older, dog-savvy children who understand how to interact respectfully with dogs could potentially be a great fit.
What we're really looking for is someone who can see past Atlas's initially reserved exterior and give him a little time to show them who he actually is.
Because that 60-pound muscular fellow with the serious expression?
He's a sweetheart.
Atlas doesn't need someone who expects an instant performance. He needs someone willing to give him a little patience, some structure, plenty of love and the chance to settle into family life at his own pace.
Give Atlas a little time... and he'll give you his heart.
