Meet Berry!

Some puppies get a difficult start in life, and little Berry's journey began with challenges most dogs will never face. This beautiful red Labrador Retriever puppy, who turns 8 weeks old on July 12th, was born with a severe spinal deformity. When her breeder brought her to the veterinarian for euthanasia, her future seemed uncertain. But we saw something worth fighting for - a bright-eyed puppy with a spark that deserved a chance.

In the two short weeks since coming into our care, Berry has amazed everyone around her. When she arrived, she had very little control of her back end and struggled with her front legs as well. She is incontinent and wears diapers, and she will likely need a wheelchair as she grows. But thanks to intensive physical therapy, Berry is already doing things we once weren't sure would be possible. She can stand, walk, run, and play on all four legs - a bit wobbly, but always determined.

An orthopedic specialist has confirmed that Berry's condition is not surgically correctable. The good news is that she is currently comfortable and non-painful. However, because her spine is still growing and changing, her future family will need to monitor her comfort and quality of life as she develops. Ongoing physical therapy will be essential to helping Berry stay strong, comfortable, and mobile. One of her favorite activities is swimming, which allows her to exercise while building strength and confidence.

If all of this sounds like a lot, Berry would like you to know something important: she doesn't see herself as different. She is a typical Lab puppy through and through - happy, affectionate, playful, curious, and always ready for fun. She loves people, gets along well with dogs and cats, and approaches every day with enthusiasm and optimism.

Berry is looking for a special family - one willing to embrace both the joys and responsibilities that come with loving a puppy with medical needs. She will come with age appropriate- vaccines, and microchipped. Due to her medical, her spay will be delayed and Berry will be adopted on a spay contract.
