OUT-OF-TOWN Dogs with NDR refer to dogs we have saved that have yet to make their journey to Ontario. These dogs are currently in our care with the help of our partners in the area. These dogs will all travel to the Niagara Region once an appropriate adopter or local foster is found.

Nokami was rescued from the streets after being hit by a car and being unable to walk. She was brought to the vet hospital where it was discovered she had broken her hips, however no surgery was needed – she was put on a kennel rest, given lots of TLC and her hips healed nicely. She quickly adapted to life at the shelter and quickly warmed up to the staff.

Nokami is an energetic and playful dog who can initially be very shy and cautious with unfamiliar people. She may move away if someone tries to approach or handle her before she feels comfortable. Once she becomes familiar with a person and develops trust, she is much more willing to approach for attention and love.

Nokami will benefit from caregivers who give her time and space to approach on her own terms. Once she feels secure, her playful and energetic personality becomes much more apparent.

Nokami is lovely and sweet and has the best wiggly bum when she sees her favourite people coming to see her. She loves attention and will nudge her little nose under your arm for a snuggle. She is playful with other dogs of all sizes and can usually be found lounging in the sun.

Medical Notes: Treated for ehrlichia & anaplasmosis. Grade 2 periodontal disease; scheduled for dental cleaning after completion of doxycycline.

Good with men: Yes, she has had positive experiences with male caregivers and the male veterinarian

Good with kids: Yes, older children recommended as her interactions with kids has been limited

Good with other dogs: Yes

Good with cats: Unknown

House trained: Unknown, she has never been in a house before, however in the area that she is currently living in, there is an interior and exterior area and she knows to go to the bathroom outside on the gravel, versus on the tiled area where she sleeps. House training will be required when she is introduced into a home environment.

Crate trained: No

Energy Level: Medium, she is energetic and playful once she feels comfortable

Can be handled/touched: Yes, she did well for her grooming and vet examination. She can be nervous at first but she really loves attention and affection from people that she knows.

Barker: Occasionally, she joins in with other dogs barking around her especially when spotting another dog outside her area

Flight risk: Yes, after a long and stressful travel day from Mexico and being introduced to an entirely new environment, with new people and nothing being familiar she will be quite nervous and may try to run. Extra precautions should be taken to ensure she cannot escape a home or vehicle while she settles in.

Food aggressive: No, she has no food aggression towards people. She will protect her food from other dogs that try to steal it. She has lived in an environment where food has been a competitive resource, and she has learned to protect her food from other dogs. If another dog attempts to take her food, she may show her teeth as a warning to maintain possession of the resource. It is recommended that dogs should initially be fed separately and she should be given a secure, predictable space to eat without competition until she is more comfortable.

Walks on leash: In progress, she is still developing confidence on leash and currently finds leash walking challenging. Patient, gradual, positive training will be important rather than forcing her through situations that make her uncomfortable.

Rides well in car: Yes, she has had limited experience in a car but was calm on her most recent car ride

Destructive: No known destructive behaviours

Needs a home with a yard: Preferred

Needs a home with another dog: She would likely benefit from having another confident dog in the home to help her adapt to her new environment

Can live in an apartment: Possibly in a smaller building in a quieter neighbourhood
