Meet Tommy Boy, a truly special Pyr who is currently in boarding and looking for a foster or forever home! Tommy spent his previous life on a farm, where he faithfully guarded the chickens, although he eventually decided that chasing the steers was a little more exciting than his job description. These days, Tommy seems to have happily retired from farm life and discovered that the indoor life - and especially air conditioning - is pretty wonderful! Tommy is a very chill, low-activity boy who enjoys meandering around the yard for a little patrol, taking care of business, and then heading right back inside to relax. He is leash trained and has some surprisingly good obedience skills. Say “Tommy, come,” and he will actually come - which, as any Pyr person knows, is practically a miracle! He also knows “sit” and will happily do so for a treat of chicken jerky.
When it comes to other dogs, Tommy previously lived happily with another canine until his companion passed away. Since arriving at boarding, he has been nonreactive around other dogs. He also meets new people beautifully and is a very friendly fellow. The neighborhood children used to visit him regularly, and Tommy was always happy to see them. He is so calm, gentle, and patient that he could be a wonderful companion for kids of all sizes. He has also lived around chickens and does just fine with them. Digging isn't his thing, either. And then there is Tommy's barking - or should we say, lack thereof! We have yet to hear this boy bark. He does become very alert when loud cars pass by while he is in the yard, but he simply watches without making a fuss.
Tommy is an absolute dream for grooming. After spending THREE HOURS in the tub, he was so relaxed that he nearly fell asleep! Clearly, this gentleman knows how to enjoy the finer things in life. What makes Tommy especially wonderful is his incredibly gentle and calm nature. He loves pets and attention more than anything and is a true gentle giant with wonderfully polite manners. His disposition is priceless. Tommy is patient, loving, quiet, and simply wants to be near his people. He isn't looking for a life of excitement - he's looking for a family to love and a comfortable place to call home that has a 5-foot securely fenced yard, air conditioning, and parents who will spend plenty of time with him because being with his people is his favorite thing. A child companion could be wonderful, and he could live with or without other pets. Most importantly, Tommy wants to be part of the family.

Due to the high level of interest we can't respond to emails unless an application has been submitted.
Our goal is to assess every application on its own merits. Key considerations are: 1) the experience of the applicant with large breed dogs 2) children in the household or regularly visiting the household are ready for a large-breed dog who is a guardian by nature (www.nationalpyr.org/know-the-breed) and 3) the sex of other dogs currently residing in the household to avoid same-sex aggression issues. For puppies under six months old, the applicant’s ability to socialize the puppy with older dogs is a priority.
Secure VISIBLE fencing is required; invisible fencing WILL NOT contain this breed.
