Wanda in AL - A Sweet Cuddle-Bug - Great Pyrenees Dog for Adoption in Beacon, New York

Meet Wanda, a sweet Great Pyrenees who was a stray in Alabama, found her way to the animal shelter extremely underweight, and is now thriving in foster care while working on gaining another 25 pounds. She has long, soft fur which is currently shaved due to matting, but it's expected to grow back beautifully now that she's getting lots of attention and good groceries.

Wanda is housebroken, leash trained, and crate trained, and knows how to sit on command. She's a low-key, lazy girl who prefers being inside and enjoys watching the world go by, whether that's the neighbor's kids playing or cars driving down the street. Her foster family has a fenced yard, and Wanda has never tried to escape or run off. She's done great meeting new people, including at vet visits, though she will bark at the UPS guy. She hasn't been around children directly since her foster family doesn't have kids, but she watches the neighbor's children, who range from 8 to 15, with a lot of curiosity. She gets along well with both indoor and outdoor cats of all ages, seeming unbothered by them, and does well with other dogs of different sizes and energy levels, including her foster home's three resident dogs. She's shy at first around new dogs and takes some time to warm up. The one thing she prefers to do solo is eating, as she can be protective of her food around other pets, though this isn't an issue with humans.

Wanda is, at heart, a total cuddle-bug who will shove her paw in your face and swat you if you're not giving her enough attention. She loves sleeping on top of her people, curling up in soft blankets, and giving hugs - she'll trust fall into your arms, so be ready to catch her for that embrace! Bread is her favorite treat. She'd do best in a low volume home, as a leash-walk-only dog or with access to a 4-foot fenced yard, and while she'd be perfectly happy as an only pet, she'd also do well with one or two dog or cat siblings. Above all, Wanda is a sweet, affectionate snuggle-buddy who just wants your attention.

Our goal is to assess every application on its own merits. Key considerations are: 1) the experience of the applicant with large breed dogs 2) children in the household or regularly visiting the household are ready for a large-breed dog who is a guardian by nature (www.nationalpyr.org/know-the-breed) and 3) the sex of other dogs currently residing in the household to avoid same-sex aggression issues. For puppies under six months old, the applicants ability to socialize the puppy with older dogs is a priority.
