Meet Freya!
At 2 to 3 years old, Freya is a beautiful Great Dane who is finally getting the care she has always deserved. She currently weighs around 115 pounds, but she came to us severely underweight and malnourished after a life of significant neglect. A healthy weight for Freya will likely be somewhere around 130 to 140 pounds, so right now her foster family is focused on safely helping her gain weight and get healthy.
What makes Freya so special is that despite everything she has experienced, she absolutely loves people. She is incredibly affectionate, bonds deeply with her humans, and truly does not have a mean bone in her body. She is wonderful with everyone she meets and good with kids, although older children would probably be the best fit simply because Freya has very little awareness that she is an enormous dog!
And yes, she is every bit a Great Dane. Freya wants to lean her entire body against you, follow right beside you, curl up as close as physically possible, and occasionally decide that all 115 pounds of her belongs directly on top of you. She loves to play, enjoys her bones, drools, makes a complete mess when she drinks water, and is basically a giant lap dog. She also absolutely loves car rides and rides beautifully in the car, making her a great companion for adventures. For someone who knows and loves the breed, Freya is the real deal.
Freya is fully house trained and has not been destructive in her foster home. She walks pretty well on leash but can pull when something catches her attention, so her family will need to be comfortable handling a very large, powerful dog. She does well with other dogs, but because her play style can be rough and she doesn’t realize her own size, we would prefer medium to large canine companions for her. She is not aggressive toward small dogs; we simply think larger playmates are a safer match. She would also be completely fine being your one and only! We do not know how she is with cats.
Freya bonds very deeply with her people and truly wants to be wherever they are. Because of that, we would love to find her a home where someone is around a decent amount of the time. She doesn’t particularly enjoy being left alone for long stretches and would be happiest with a family who wants a big shadow following them from room to room. After everything she’s been through, being close to her people seems to be where she feels happiest and most secure.
Because Freya experienced starvation, meals need to be handled thoughtfully. Food is understandably very important to her, so she must be fed completely separately from other animals in a calm space. She currently uses a slow feeder, and her new family will need to continue helping her develop a healthy relationship with food as she reaches and maintains an appropriate weight.
Freya is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and will have her health certificate prior to adoption. She may have been failed badly at the beginning of her life, but that is not where her story has to end. Freya is a loving, loyal, goofy, wonderfully typical Great Dane who deserves a family that will give her the security, care, and love she should have had all along.
