(It's me. Rusty. Coming to you live from my foster's living room, where I have claimed a specific cushion and consider the matter closed.)
Hey. Rusty here.
The vet says I'm two, and the vet went to school for this, so let's all agree to believe him. I'm forty pounds of lean, well-organized athlete. Not a big dog. Not a small dog. The exact size of dog that can absolutely still fit on your couch, in case that comes up later.
Let me tell you about the ball.
The ball is not a toy. The ball is a calling. I have thought about the ball in ways most creatures will never think about anything. Throw it once and I will return it. Throw it forty times and I will return it forty times, each one with the fresh amazement of a dog who genuinely did not see that coming. You will get tired first. I want you to know that going in, with no hard feelings.
The Rusty Rulebook
Teammates: Off leash, I'm everybody's guy. I read the room, I match energy, I know when the wrestling is over. Loose dog park politics? I've got it handled.
The leash situation: Look. Something happens when there's six feet of nylon between me and a stranger dog. I get opinions. Not about all of them, just some of them, and I have never once been able to explain my criteria. I'm working on it. A person with steady hands and a pocket of treats can get me there faster than you'd think.
Cats: No comment. Genuinely. Nobody has introduced me to one, so my file on cats is completely blank. I'm open to a formal evaluation.
Home life: I already live in a house, so you can skip the part where we find out whether I know what stairs are. I do. I've got the energy of a two year old with a job, and a family that likes to move around suits me better than one that likes to nap.
How to Bribe Me
You already know. It's the ball. Squeaky, tennis, rubber, chuck-it, sad deflated one from behind the shed, I don't discriminate. Bring a ball to our first meeting and I will assume you have come to sign me to a lifetime contract, and I will be right.
