Shirley is a 9-week-old female Pitty mix. She’s a gentle soul who can be a bit reserved at first until she feels comfortable, and then her playful side starts to shine. She may take a minute to soak things in when something is brand new, but it doesn’t take long before her curiosity kicks in and she’s ready to explore.
Shirley is being fostered in Austin, Texas, and is available for adoption out of state. Transport can be arranged by the rescue once she is matched with an approved adopter. The adoption process includes an application, phone interview, video call with the foster home, virtual home visit, and vet and personal reference checks.
Sweet Shirley, her five siblings, and their mom were pulled from the Houston city shelter within hours of being euthanized for space, a sadly common occurrence in Texas. Thankfully, they made it out safely and are now getting the chance to grow up in loving foster care. Mom is around 40 pounds. We've included a picture of her for reference.
Right now, Shirley is at that fun puppy age where everything is new and there’s always something to investigate. She loves playing and wrestling with her littermates, exploring her surroundings, nibbling on whatever happens to be within reach, and then crashing hard after wearing herself out.
Like any puppy her age, Shirley is just beginning to learn how the world works. She isn’t potty trained, crate trained, or leash trained yet, so she’ll need a family ready to guide her with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Because she’s still so young, she’ll do best in a home where someone is around more often than not to help her establish routines, build confidence, and continue her socialization.
A home with another well-balanced dog who would be welcoming and patient with a puppy would be a huge plus for Shirley. Having a good canine role model can help her learn the ropes of how to be a dog, from appropriate play and boundaries to settling into the everyday rhythm of a home.
Bringing home a puppy is a big commitment, and we want to make sure everyone in the household is ready for the time, patience, and responsibility that come with raising one. Those early months are an investment, but they’re also some of the most rewarding as you watch your puppy learn, grow, and become a lifelong companion.
