Luna's story starts in the worst way a domestic pigeon's can. She was found as a baby, huddled in a yard with her sibling: two tiny white pigeons with no mother in sight, most likely dumped by the "dove release" industry. The white "doves" released at weddings and memorials are domestic pigeons, and many have no idea how to find food or shelter on their own. Luna's sibling didn't survive. Luna did. She grew into a pure white beauty with a soft pink beak, dark eyes, and coral-red feet, but she was cautious, and who could blame her? Then she met Boop.
Boop is a confirmed Archangel pigeon, a very old fancy breed prized for the metallic sheen of its feathers. He dresses the part in deep chocolate-cinnamon feathers, darker wings with a green-black gleam, a tidy peaked crest, and bright eyes. In Germany the breed goes by Gimpel, the word for the Eurasian bullfinch, but Boop lives up to his English name. Archangels are supposed to stand guard, and standing is his great talent. Boop is in no hurry about anything, ever.
That turned out to be exactly what Luna needed. With her husband holding steady, she has become the boisterous half of the marriage, exploring every corner of every room while he stays put and lets her come back to him. She's named for the moon, and she's found the steady planet she can orbit.
Because Luna's confidence was hard-won, and because Boop's idea of a big day is a long stand, they're happiest in a calm home. Their last foster home was busy and noisy, and they found it overwhelming. A quieter environment, with room for Luna to roam and a good spot for Boop to contemplate, is where they'll thrive. If your home runs at a gentle hum, Luna has plenty left to explore, and Boop will be happy to stand right next to you while she does!
