Kobuk's story starts in Evanston, where he was found as a baby with a compound fracture in one wing and wounds across his head. He was also badly emaciated, so his surgery had to wait. First he needed to grow strong enough to survive anesthesia. Once he was, the broken wing was amputated, and he came through it beautifully.
His namesake, Alaska's Kobuk Valley, has no roads in. Just about everyone who gets there flies. Our Kobuk went the other way: he gave up flying and kept everything else. Today he's fully recovered and goes everywhere on foot. Take a look at his Halloween portrait. The paper bats behind him can keep their wings. He is clearly not impressed.
Life without flight means Kobuk needs to live indoors, where he's safe from predators and never has to escape anything. He'll be happiest with a ground-level setup — low perches, soft footing like a folded blanket, a shallow dish for bathing, and nothing high he might try to hop down from.
Kobuk has already made the hardest trip of his life. Now he's looking for somewhere to stay put. If you can offer a quiet indoor home and don't mind getting down on the floor to say hello, or offering a helping hand onto the couch, please apply to adopt him!
