Firefly's story started in a place no puppy should ever have to know.
She and her brother, Dragonfly, were born to Mama Butterfly, who was living outside with her puppies in heartbreaking conditions in South Carolina. Their situation came to light when backyard breeders contacted a very rural shelter, saying they had dogs they could no longer use for breeding and, if the shelter couldn't take them, they would simply shoot them. The shelter was already packed, so they reached out to us.
We were able to save multiple dogs from the situation, including Butterfly and her two puppies. While some of the dogs we rescued are receiving medical care and others have already started their journeys toward forever, Firefly and Dragonfly have spent the last few weeks growing up safely in foster care.
And what a difference those few weeks have made.
Firefly has gotten to experience the things every puppy should know — a safe place to sleep, a full belly, plenty of love and attention, and the chance to simply be a puppy. Now she's ready for the next chapter: finding a family of her very own.
Firefly will be arriving in Pennsylvania on September 2 and is available through our foster-to-adopt program. We are accepting applications through August 26, with pickup in Pottstown on September 2. After August 26, any puppies not selected through foster-to-adopt will head into foster homes and become available for adoption on or after September 16.
One important note for anyone considering Firefly: Shih Tzus are a breed that requires regular, ongoing grooming to keep their coats healthy and comfortable. They can be prone to breed-specific health concerns, including dental and eye issues, as well as concerns associated with their short faces and small jaws. Please take the time to research the common health and care needs of the breed so you understand what a lifetime commitment with a Shih Tzu could look like.
Firefly has already come so far from the life she was born into. Now we want to see her grow up surrounded by love, comfort, and a family who will cherish her for the rest of her life.
She's ready to leave her difficult beginning behind and flutter toward a forever of her own.
