Axel, 5 yr old silver lab, 91 lbs, neutered

Background:
Axel was owner-surrendered to Antioch Animal Services and is now looking for a fresh start with a home that can match his size, energy, and big-hearted personality.

What Axel's Rescue Rep Says:
Axel is a 5-year-old silver Labrador Retriever with an impressive presence—he’s a large, strong dog who makes an enthusiastic first impression. He greeted the evaluator right away with excitement and friendliness, even popping his front paws up briefly, but he responded well to correction and settled quickly.

He is an affectionate, people-oriented dog who truly enjoys human interaction. Axel was very tolerant during handling and allowed full-body touch with ease, including ears, paws, and belly. He even offered his paw and leaned in for more attention, especially enjoying chest rubs.

Axel has a high energy level and will need a home committed to providing regular exercise and engagement. He is especially motivated by tennis balls and clearly lights up when it’s time to play—fetch is definitely his favorite activity. A home with a yard where he can run and play would be ideal.

He does need some basic training and continued structure, but he is eager to please and responds well to both treats and attention. He can get excited when food is involved (jumping and panting), but with guidance, he is able to settle and take treats gently when asked.

Axel showed no signs of food guarding—he remained calm and tolerant when his food bowl was handled and even removed during feeding. On leash, he will benefit from additional training. While not an extreme puller, his size means leash manners will be important for safe and enjoyable walks.

Because of his size, strength, and enthusiastic nature, Axel would do best in a home with older children who can comfortably interact with an energetic dog. Axel has been around cats and other dogs, but will need slow introductions. He could be a loving, loyal companion who will thrive with an active family willing to provide structure, consistency, and plenty of outlets for his energy. With the right home, Axel has all the potential to become a wonderful, well-rounded family dog.

Medical:
Axel appears to be in good health, is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. Heartworm test to be done soon.
