Roomba: The Big Fluffy Goofball With a Heart of Gold

Roomba is a 1 year old Goldendoodle weighing in at around 60 pounds, with a soft non-shedding coat that makes him an option for those with allergies. He came to DPS under heartbreaking circumstances when his owner had to leave the country and could not take him along. It was clear from the moment he arrived that he had been deeply loved and exceptionally cared for, and his owner entrusted us with finding him the wonderful next chapter he deserves.

Roomba is sweet, affectionate, funny, and just the right amount of ridiculous. He’s the kind of dog who can spend most of the day lounging quietly by your feet, then suddenly burst into goofy excitement over a walk, a tennis ball, or the possibility of attention.

From Confused Newcomer to Happy House Dog

When Roomba first arrived in foster care, he was understandably unsettled. He spent much of his first night trying to process the sudden change in his world.

By the second day, after a bath and a little reassurance, he began relaxing into home life. It was obvious he was searching for his person and trying to understand where he belonged, but with consistency and patience, his goofy and affectionate personality started shining through.

Now that he’s settled in, Roomba has become a calm and devoted companion who loves being near his humans. He follows people from room to room in the funniest possible way — usually walking ahead of them while constantly looking backward to make sure everyone is still together. He absolutely wants to be part of everything.

He’s not allowed on the furniture in his foster home, but if given the opportunity, he would happily turn himself into a 60-pound lap dog. If someone sits on the floor, he immediately sprawls across their lap like he weighs seven pounds instead of sixty.

Smart, Silly, and Full of Personality

Roomba is an incredibly smart dog with a playful streak that keeps life entertaining. He recently learned how to play fetch and now loves backyard games with tennis balls and rope toys. He also appears to understand commands in both English and Spanish, which has led his foster family to jokingly refer to him as bilingual.

One of his funniest habits is enthusiastically chasing his own tail like it’s the most exciting thing he’s ever seen.

For most of the day, though, he’s surprisingly mellow. After breakfast, he typically settles into a dog bed in the home office and naps quietly nearby while his foster works. He enjoys being close to his people but doesn’t need constant activity every second of the day.

Walks Begin With Chaos... Then Become Lovely

Roomba’s biggest “work in progress” moments happen at the start of walks. When he gets excited, he temporarily forgets his manners and may jump, chew on the leash, or bounce around with pure unfiltered enthusiasm. Fortunately, this stage usually lasts only a minute or two before he settles himself and becomes a very pleasant walking companion.

He’s already responding well to consistent leash training and has made noticeable progress with redlight-greenlight heeling work. His foster believes he has a strong training foundation and simply needs consistency and structure moving forward.

Wonderful With Dogs and Teenagers

Roomba has done very well with the resident Scottish Terrier in his foster home. In fact, he was initially a little intimidated by the much smaller dog, but now eagerly tries to engage him in games of chase around the yard.

He especially seems to adore teenagers and has formed strong bonds with them. Because of his size and occasional excited jumping or playful mouthing, he would likely do best with older children or teens while he continues polishing his manners. His foster believes he could absolutely succeed with younger kids too, but ongoing training and supervision would be important.

Excellent House Manners

Roomba is fully potty trained with zero accidents in foster care. He sleeps happily on a dog bed at night and can also use a crate if needed, though he clearly prefers sleeping outside of it now.

One especially sweet thing about him is what he does when left alone. Rather than getting into trouble, he simply waits exactly where you left him — usually sitting near the front door patiently waiting for his people to return.

He does not dig, destroy things, or mark in the home. His only real “bad habits” stem from excitement and enthusiasm, not malice. He can be mouthy during play, but he’s already learning to redirect appropriately onto toys and responds very well to guidance.

Why Everyone Falls for Roomba

There’s something impossible not to love about a giant fluffy dog who thinks he’s a lapdog, speaks two languages, chases his own tail with complete commitment, and follows you around like an oversized shadow.

Roomba is goofy without being wild, affectionate without being clingy, and smart enough to keep life interesting. He’s the kind of dog who will make you laugh daily while also quietly becoming one of the most loyal companions you’ve ever had.

His former owner loved him deeply. Now he’s waiting for the next family who will love him just as much.
