Vixen - German Shepherd Dog and Mixed Breed Dog for Adoption in Monticello, Iowa

Vixen is a gentle, sweet boy who is still learning that the world can be a safe place. He was surrendered in Texas alongside his brother after their owner no longer had time for them. It quickly became clear that Vixen had not had much socialization or the opportunity to experience the world the way a young dog should.

Rather than let this sweet, shy boy fall through the cracks, we decided to bring Vixen to Iowa. We knew our staff, volunteers, and foster network could give him the patience, encouragement, and positive experiences he needed to begin building his confidence and learning how to be a dog. Sometimes a dog doesn't need someone to fix them. They just need someone willing to give them the time they were never given before.

Vixen is naturally reserved and shy, and the shelter environment can be overwhelming for him. He can be flighty or skittish when he's nervous and takes his time getting comfortable with new people and experiences. But Vixen is also intelligent, calm, and incredibly sweet. As he becomes more comfortable, we are hopeful that we'll continue to see more of his personality emerge.

Vixen gets along well with other dogs and has done well with children ages 13 and up. He is crate trained and keeps his kennel clean. Having other dogs around may help him feel more comfortable, and a consistent routine will be important as he continues learning that he is safe.

Vixen will need a patient, experienced owner who understands that confidence doesn't happen overnight. A quiet home, predictable routine, and plenty of positive reinforcement will give him the foundation he needs to continue blossoming.

Vixen may have started his journey with very little socialization, but that's not where his story has to end. He came all the way from Texas to Iowa because people believed he was worth the time and effort. Now we're looking for the person who will continue that journey with him and show Vixen just how good life can be.
