Meet Stella!
Stella is the total package . . . friendly, social, trained, and ready for a family of her own.
This sweet girl arrived at the Chillicothe Animal Shelter in April 2025 and has spent over a year waiting for someone to choose her. We pulled her out this week and she is now in Kansas City and ready for a home of her own!
While she waited, Stella made the most of her time by participating in Missouri's Puppies for Parolees program, where shelter dogs work with inmates on obedience training, manners, and socialization.
As a graduate of the program, Stella has a wonderful foundation and knows commands such as:
- Sit
- Stay
- Down
- Come
She was also reported to be potty trained, giving her future family a great head start.
One of Stella's biggest advantages is her size. At approximately 35-40 pounds, she's a wonderful medium-sized dog . . .big enough to join you on adventures, but small enough to comfortably fit into many households.
But Stella's best qualities go far beyond her training.
She is a friendly, easy going dog who enjoys being around people and loves spending time with other dogs. We've had her in playgroups with dogs of different sizes, ages, and personalities, and she has done wonderfully. She enjoys canine companionship and knows how to interact appropriately with other dogs.
Stella has the kind of temperament that makes you wonder why she's still waiting.
She's affectionate, well-mannered, social, and adaptable qualities that make her an excellent family companion.
Here is a video of her with her kennelmate out of the shelter: https://youtu.be/FWxQm2QpYLk
This is he video of her IN the shelter. Can you believe she was there for 1 yr and 1 month?!: https://youtu.be/KGknPuXpp-0
After spending more than a year in a shelter environment, Stella is more than ready to trade her kennel for a couch, her shelter routine for family adventures, and her temporary address for a forever home.

If you're looking for a loyal companion with both training and personality, Stella may be your perfect match.

About Day of the Dogs
Day of the Dogs is a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping shelter and rescue dogs find safety, families, and second chances.
Founded in 2015 by a Kansas City native, Day of the Dogs began after Pam moved to Houston, Texas and witnessed firsthand the devastating shelter overcrowding crisis facing southern communities, where some shelters have only days to find an outcome for homeless pets.
Today, Day of the Dogs coordinates life-saving transports from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and other southern areas to rescue partners, shelters, fosters, and adopters in Northwest Indiana/Chicagoland and the Kansas City region communities where adoption demand can help create better outcomes for pets in need. We also focus on long stay dogs in the Greater Kansas City and surrounding rural areas to help those pets get out of kennels and into homes.
We also facilitate direct adoptions through our foster networks in both Kansas City and Northwest Indiana and partner with shelters and rescue organizations across Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, and Indiana to save more lives together.
Because every open foster home creates another opportunity to save a dog, we are always looking for foster families to join our mission.
Day of the Dogs operates entirely on donations. Every transport, veterinary appointment, supply purchase, and life saved is possible because of supporters who believe every dog deserves a chance.
