Meet Skippy!
If you're looking for a dog who genuinely loves people, look no further than Skippy.
This handsome 35-pound Heeler mix has never met a stranger. When you walk into the room, Skippy makes it his mission to come say hello. In fact, he doesn't stop with just one person. . . he wants to greet everyone!
One of our favorite things about Skippy is how affectionate he is. He loves attention, loves being petted, and has a way of wrapping himself around you in a big doggy hug that makes you feel like you've been friends forever.
Skippy came to the Chillicothe Animal Shelter as an owner surrender in July 2023. We got him out of the shelter this week and now he is here in Kansas City and ready for his own family! While we can't change the years he spent waiting, we can help make sure his future is filled with the love and companionship he deserves.
And honestly, that's what Skippy wants most.
He isn't asking for much.
A family.
A couch.
A person to love.
A place where he belongs.
At about 35 pounds, he's a great size . . . .not too big and not too small AND his friendly, people-oriented personality makes him the kind of dog who fits naturally into family life.
If you've been searching for a loyal companion who will greet you enthusiastically every day and make you feel like the most important person in the room, Skippy may be exactly who you've been looking for.
After nearly three years of waiting, it's time for Skippy's story to have a happy ending.
He also does well with dogs of all sizes. Here is a video we took of him with his kennelmate at the shelter: https://youtu.be/mNDvWQkFhxI
We've had him out with all sizes and sex dogs and he did fine with everyone.

About Day of the Dogs
Day of the Dogs is a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping shelter and rescue dogs find safety, families, and second chances.
Founded in 2015 by a Kansas City native, Day of the Dogs began after Pam moved to Houston, Texas and witnessed firsthand the devastating shelter overcrowding crisis facing southern communities, where some shelters have only days to find an outcome for homeless pets.
Today, Day of the Dogs coordinates life-saving transports from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and other southern areas to rescue partners, shelters, fosters, and adopters in Northwest Indiana/Chicagoland and the Kansas City region communities where adoption demand can help create better outcomes for pets in need. We also focus on long stay dogs in the Greater Kansas City and surrounding rural areas to help those pets get out of kennels and into homes.
We also facilitate direct adoptions through our foster networks in both Kansas City and Northwest Indiana and partner with shelters and rescue organizations across Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, and Indiana to save more lives together.
Because every open foster home creates another opportunity to save a dog, we are always looking for foster families to join our mission.
Day of the Dogs operates entirely on donations. Every transport, veterinary appointment, supply purchase, and life saved is possible because of supporters who believe every dog deserves a chance.
