Nala Banks is a 1-year-old, 36-pound Lab/Catahoula mix with a magnificent name, a spectacular face, and the entirely reasonable conviction that trust should not be distributed wholesale to random folks.
She's smart, affectionate, potty trained, crate-trained, eager to please, and wonderfully sweet once she feels secure. Nala spent much of her first year without the stability and social experience a young dog deserves, so unfamiliar people and chaotic situations can initially inspire some high-level forensic skepticism. She observes. She deliberates. She conducts peer review. Nala Banks does not accept walk-ins.
She is learning that leash reactivity is not required. She is in the process of being muzzle-trained and is doing so well. She has quickly mastered "sit" and "paw." She will wait at the curb until signaled to proceed on her walks. She can be protective of things and people she values, and she has made it clear that cats and small, yappy dogs are not her preferred roommates. Her future home should be without either. Older kids are the better match, too. Give her a calmer, dog-savvy home with structure and patience, and this girl starts absolutely cooking.
Because once Nala Banks decides you're legitimate, the "Banks" opens. Affection accrues. Goofiness appreciates exponentially. Loyalty compounds at frankly irresponsible rates. The suspicion evaporates and underneath it is this funny, devoted, enormously loving young dog who has been waiting for a reason to unclench.
She's only one. She's brilliant, complicated, hilarious, beautiful, and still becoming. Nala may make you earn your membership, but once you're in, you are catastrophically in.
Some dogs love everybody. Nala Banks has the audacity to have favorites. Go become one.
