Meet Mikey
3.5 years old 52 lbs Chocolate Lab Mix
Sometimes life changes in ways completely beyond our control.
For Mikey, that change came when the person he loved was incarcerated and could no longer care for him. Suddenly, everything familiar disappeared. But this sweet boy has landed in a wonderful foster home, and what we're learning about him just keeps getting better.
Mikey is 3.5 years old, 52 pounds, neutered, and up to date on vaccinations. He is heartworm positive, but his treatment has already begun and will be covered by Take Paws Rescue.
And according to his foster family? Mikey is a really, really good boy.
He has not had a single accident in their home and can be trusted when left alone. He's shown no destructive behavior and no separation anxiety. His foster family does have another dog, and they believe having a canine companion may help him feel comfortable and secure.
Mikey has especially impressed everyone with his behavior around dogs smaller than he is. He's wonderful at reading their body language, plays gently, and respects their boundaries. He's a little more apprehensive around larger dogs, so thoughtful introductions and the right match are important. A home with a friendly smaller canine companion could be a wonderful fit for him.
More Mikey goodness:
Fully house trained
Excellent house manners
Non-destructive
No separation anxiety observed in his foster home
Wonderful with smaller dogs
Gentle, respectful play style
Walks beautifully on leash
Doesn't try to dart through doors
Food motivated and eager to learn
Knows sit, stay, lay down, off, and no jumping
Affectionate, loyal, and happiest near his people
When Mikey first meets someone new, he may give a few barks while he figures out who you are. Give him a moment to realize you're safe, and his sweet, affectionate personality quickly begins to appear.
He's also proving to be a fantastic walking companion. Mikey walks nicely on leash and doesn't try to bolt out the door, making adventures with this handsome guy pretty enjoyable. And when the adventures are over? His foster family's camera has revealed that Mikey's preferred pastime while they're gone is... sleeping on the couch.
Mikey would love a home where he can enjoy regular walks, some adventures, plenty of affection, and quiet evenings with his people. Another compatible dog, particularly a smaller confident friend, may be a wonderful bonus.
His foster family says it best: "He's great, and we love him. We want him to find the best home."
Mikey didn't choose for his life to change. But he's handled that change by showing everyone exactly who he is: a smart, well-mannered, loving dog who is ready to belong to someone again.
Now he just needs the family who will make sure his next chapter is his forever one.
